Bomb Threat Girl Gets Let Off!

Fri Aug 05, 2005 2:37 am

I am gobsmaked about this. A jury in the UK has just acquiteed a girl of getting he freiend to make a bomb threat, on the grounds.... and get this...

It was only a joke

First of all the sanity of the jury must be questioned, mind the judge di make her pay her legal fees about 15K gbp, but wouldn't ie be nice if every airline banned her for life

Its a long walk back to Oz

Stupid Cow

So on that basis every threat now made in the UK can be argued 'itsa a joke'

Just like our legal system

Don't blame it on the legal system. Blame it on the jurors. Unfortunately all too often we have the same brain dead bunch sitting in the jury box here as well.

Originally I thought that this was simple text-banter which had got out of control - silly but not intentionally malicious.

But when I read through the entire text message exchange, it was blatantly clear in my mind that there was deliberate encouragement to throw a bomb scare and delay the flight:

Sceats (the accused): “Can you call the police. There is a bomb on board. The flight is 8.10. Leaving from Stansted. Going to Dublin. The number is 999. Do it now.”

Her friend asks if she is "serious".

Sceats: “Absolutely. Hurry up. Do it from the payphone outside. Put on an accent. Tell them there is a man with a gun to your head telling you to make the phone call.”

How did that end up before a jury? Couldn't a magistrate have dealt with it?

6 months probation, £10,000 fine plus the 15k costs, and deportation would've been a good start.
Breakfast in BHX, lunch in FAO, dinner in TIP, baggage in YYC.

That has to do with the difference in legal systems between the US/UK model and most of the legal systems in Continental Europe.

Waste of time - FR are very strict on closing check in 40 minutes before departure!  Silly

She shouldn't have got off - if the friend had called on the basis of the first text message perhaps. But with a response like that? Harldy sounds like a joke, does it?
No trees were harmed by this message. However, several million electrons were terribly inconvenienced

The judge will look if she is likely to reoffend in future and if the state's expenses for e.g. unemployment for her and a prison sentence are higher than if lets her go with a warning.
Many people are let off with a strict warning and never reoffend, because they have learned their lesson. Additionaly making her pay the fine will give her a warning as well.

Also, I understand that she was due to return to Oz to go to Uni.

Her enforced stay in the UK put a stop to that.

Personally, I think that she was lucky with jury. However, it is down to the jury, which is a system which will throw a wobbly sometimes.
