Ships Not Taken...

Tue May 02, 2000 4:24 am

I saw some photos on this sight of THE MOST BEAUTIFUL 747, all white, all the windows covered, that was for Air France but they refused it or something. I don't get that. How can they refuse delivery? I mean, they still had to pay for it didn't they? So what does Boeing do, just fly it out somewhere and leave it? Why not paint it up in someone else's colors and deliver it to them ahead of schedule with the few necessary modifications???

Do you have a link to this picture? If it was a -400 freighter this aircraft was probably going to Cargolux. If not, maybe they paid a penalty, or they had someone lined up to buy it, but they weren't ready or nothing was sure, or they didn't want anyone knowing, so they left it white. The picture would give more clues I'm sure.

There have been many ships not taken. Ever since the introduction of jet travel in the '50s & '60s, all the oceanic shipping lines went out of business.

I, myself, have not taken, at least, 10 ships.

Long live the ocean liner!

I'll Say (Hmmm....)

I can't find the pic.s of the 747. It was a -400 regular though, not freighter, not domestic. The comments said it was for Air France.

From This Site.

The pictures were from this site, I'm not sure how to do an advanced search for a no-airline 747, however.

I think I found it! Is this it? I suppose the description was different earlier? I guess AF did not want it and found a new customer for it, Air Moroc. Apparantly it was a white tail for some time before being transferred to the new owner.

Yes, that's one of two pic.s of it. Definitely not a freighter. You say Air Moroc got it? I don't remember reading that.

sammyk is right. The last 744 destined for AF was not taken up after it was built in 1993 - and it went to Royal Air Maroc then, where it is still flying under the registration CN-RGA.

Well, I shouldnt take the credit for being right, as it said in the description that Air Moroc took it.

Thanks!!! I guess I'm still wondering what the general policy is regarding this kind of queer situation, but it's been fun hunting down that 747...

RE: Ships Not Taken...Silver Stuff

Thu May 04, 2000 6:33 am

That silver stuff is most likely to protect the covered parts from the harmfull effects of the sun. Many parts that are made of plastic, rubber (or non metal) may deteriorate in the desert sun. I suppose they could have used a different color covering, but the silver probably reflects the sun better, and keeps the heat away as well. It was probably stored for several reasons, either they didn't find a customer right away, or the customer they did find didn't need it right away. As you know, demand for pax only 744s is slowing down, granted, this was in 1993, so who knows. Also, the picture was taken in 1993, so it may have been sold in that year, anyone know when RAM took delivery of this plane?
