BWI Runway 15L/33R...any Expansion Plans?

BWI runway 15L/33R (left hand side in the photo) is 5000x100ft. From the looks of the photo BWI could expand this to 7000x150ft. without too much roadway reconstruction.

I've searched the BWI website and found nothing regarding upgrading this runway to air carrier standards.

Given the fact the other runways at BWI intersect I wonder if there's any plans to develop this concept to acheive a parallel runway configuration to increase operations.

Anyone have any info on this?

Negative. FAA won't allow it because of Aviation Blvd which runs around that end of the field, and runway over-run at the ends. The MAA (Maryland Aviation Administration is working on extending 15R/33L over Dorsey Road.

The airport wanted to put parking in the lima bean shaped piece of property at the end. The Feds said no.

On the Airport Master Plan there are options for a parallel to 10/28.

I've often wondered this myself. However, two potential problems come to mind in extending 15L/33R. First, I know there is a steep grade between the start of 33R and the start of Rwy 28. It doesn't show up very clear on a map, but I know when I've been looking out my window taxing for takeoff on 28 it seems like 15L/33R is going downhill in comparison to us. (Although, try zooming in on the point in question on a google map and maybe you'll see...) Not sure if this grade difference would impact an extension.

Second, and this may be a fairly minor point, but I'm sure the general aviation people over at Signature wouldn't be too pleased about extension and increased use of the runway they pretty much get to themselves now. Aside from US and AC commuter operations I can't remember seeing another commercial plane use the runway.

I seem to remember talks of a parallel runway to 10/28 anyway, but it's been a long time since hearing that.

Another thing is that the ground off the end of 33R rises about 50 feet from roughly the light rail track (the brown line runing parallel and below Aviation Blvd.) to the softball fields in the lower center of the picture. Extending the runway to the north will not provide adequate obstacle clearance because of the terrain.

Oh good, I wasn't the only one! I did a little digging and indeed there are, and have been, plans to build a parallel runway to 10/28 for a while.

Check out:

http://www.mdot.state.md.us/State%20...P%2003-08/4MAA/MAA%20Line%2020.pdf

That's fairly recent, it's from August 2003. But for a past from the past check out:

http://www.faa.gov/ats/asc/publications/95_ACE/App_D.pdf

Published in 1995, they were seeing a 7,800ft runway parallel to 10/28 to be completed by 2003. It pretty interesting to see the plans for new runways/extensions that made it (DEN) and those that are still lagging (BWI, FLL, etc.)

Isn't BWI 2005 traffic down slightly from 2004? Maybe the expansion has plateaued for a while and usage of the various parts of the airport can balance out, i.e. jammed Pier B and empty Pier E.

E pier has peaks when there are no gates, and flights are parked remote and a plane mate is used to drag them to the terminal. Typically Friday evenings.

The Military uses the pier a LOT, then BA and FI. USA 3000 has a healty operation of domestic and short haul International flights. AC has their Dash-8 flights.

The airport is no where near saturation calling for the additional runway.

Thanks for the info everyone.

Good to know they've studied a parallel runway option.

The original "Master Plan" from the mid '80's had a lot of interesting things on it.

F Pier running down toward the old UAL warehouse. A pier running down toward MD170.

Obviously neither of these options were chosen, but what has happened is unique. The new WN terminal is fantastic. Great area for spotting too!
