Chicago- New Airport, Expand O'Hare

Fri Feb 05, 1999 9:36 am

The city of Chicago is thinking of either building a new airport south of Chicago or just expanding the O'hare International Airport, what do you think they should do? Here is a article about it:

CHICAGO (Reuters) -- Chicago Mayor Richard Daley Thursday proposed a billion-dollar plan to construct two new terminals and two additional U.S. customs facilities at O'Hare International Airport, citing a need to better accommodate international travelers at the world's busiest airport.

Daley said his plan would provide for "seamless travel" between international and domestic flights by establishing more customs checkpoints outside O'Hare's international terminal.

The mayor's concept was supported by representatives of United Airlines, the world's largest, American Airlines and international carriers. The airlines said the plan would enhance international carrier alliances by allowing foreign carriers to share gates and terminals with domestic airlines, rather than having to use the one international terminal at O'Hare.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Under the proposal, the city, which is forecasting a 4 percent annual increase in international traffic at O'Hare, would build two new terminals, adding to three existing domestic terminals and one international terminal.

The airlines also said 20 or more wider gates proposed in the plan were needed to accommodate new and larger aircraft.

James Goodwin, president and chief operating officer of Chicago-based United, said the airline "has just about run out of viable gate space."

Under the proposal, the city, which is forecasting a 4 percent annual increase in international traffic at O'Hare, would build two new terminals, adding to three existing domestic terminals and one international terminal. The airport's heating and cooling plant would also be moved and rebuilt to accommodate the expansion.

Mary Rose Loney, Chicago's aviation commissioner, said the city still needs to refine the proposal, known as the O'Hare World Gateway concept, before putting together a financing plan for review by the airlines.

Only airport funds, such as the $3 passenger facility charge added to the cost of each ticket at O'Hare, would be used to finance the project, which is expected to cost $1 billion or more, Loney said. The city has not yet decided whether to use special facility revenue bonds or general airport revenue bonds to finance the project, Loney said.

About 72.5 million travelers passed through O'Hare in 1998, according to the city's aviation department.

An environmental review of the project, expected to take 12 to 18 months, would also be needed, Loney said.

Daley said the plan would ensure Chicago "will not be left behind," as airports in San Francisco, St. Louis, New York and Detroit expand to capture more international traffic.

Daley emphasized that the concept did not include any new runways. Communities near the airport have opposed construction of additional runways, due to noise concerns.

The mayor also said the plan was not his latest volley in an ongoing battle between the city and the state of Illinois over the question of whether the region needs a third major airport. Illinois Gov. George Ryan, who took office last month, has supported building an airport in Peotone, southwest of Chicago

The New AA Terminal at NY-JFK will have its own Customs facilities. I think if indivisual airport authorities required any new airline terminals to have in house facilities for customs alot of space would be saved instead of having separate international & domestic terminals.

Definetally expand ORD!!! Another airport would conjest the already crowded chicago area.
Plus, ORD has had the title of World's busiest airport ever since MDW lost that title..it would be ashame if the title was lost.
All the Best!

Well, I hope they expand and don't build a new airport. 1. I love ORD (mass confusion land). 2. Remember what happened the last time a city tried to replace an old airport with a new super effecient airport? They totally screwed up (you listening DEN?)

I think it is a better idea to expand O'Hare. It is a great airport.

RE: Denvers Bag system

From what I understand the major problem with Denvers airport was the bag system. I understand that BAE who was the prime contractor for that system told the city that it would take about six years to come up with a reliable system. Denver gave them three. Point being if a contractor says he needs time to do development work......Give him the Time.
