Do We Still See Any US Charter Airlines Flying?

Sat Aug 06, 2005 12:09 am

Hi!

Summer time in Portugal, hot weather, nice warm sea, nice food..... I remember many years ago ( maybe 30 years already.... ) to be at LIS airport and waiting for those US charter airlines arriving in the morning with planes full of tourists or portuguese emigrants that came to pass their vacations. Charter airlines line CAPITOL, TIA, EVERGREEN, ONA will fly mostly with their long Super Sixty DC-8's, but also some other not that usual like INTERCONTINENTAL AIRWAYS, PERFECT TOURS, SATURN, SEABOARD WORLD, WORLD AIRWAYS, ARROW AIR,.... all I want to say that in those times we anxiously expected the summer to see what airlines would be doing the charters to Portugal. Those times seems that ended, last time I remember seeing one was NORTH AMERICAN and they were flying the 757. Now my point is, are there any US charter airlines that still fly around the world tourists or emigrants? Looks not!

Of all those airlines listed only Evergreen, World, Arrow, and North American exist today. The rest have gone away.

Ryan International? They have a few airbus a/c and a few 757's. I know they do charter work out of OAK to hawaii as well as North American. There is also Champion they're always in TUL and work with 727's. World Airways is probably the biggest in terms of range as I have seen them throughout the United States, Europe, Asia, etc.

That's all I know of.

Apple vacations, and Sun Country and many others also still provide many charters in the US year round.

World Airways now owns North American.

Most charters for "warm beach spots" go to the Caribbean or Mexico now-a-days. The prices are super cheap, and the flight times are no where what they would be to go across the pond.

Champion Air is still around, but I doubt that they have international service. They do, however, still operate 727-200's...at least for a while  cheerful  .

How about Omni Air International?

I know they at least send loads of Hawaii residents to Las Vegas 6 times a week for a packager here.  Smile

Still compared to Europe, the US Charter operations are a pittance. I guess with low air fares to Mexico, Carribean and Europe by the legacy carriers and LCCs, there is little room for charter operators.

The European "Holiday" business is much more conducive to charter operators.

Most US people don't take 10-14 day Holidays , but usually 5-8 days and very rarely do they choose an all-inclusive package.

US airfares are so cheap anyway there is not reason to look elsewhere.

Remember technically Allegiant is also a charter airline.

Apple Vacations is not an airline. They do however have their own in-house airline USA3000

Other "charter" carriers include Sierra Pacific and Casino Express with 737-200s. USA Jet has a fleet of passenger configured DC-9s in addition to their cargo -9s and Falcons.

They own USA3000, and also contract with other carriers

Ambassair is the travel club, which is a bit different. TZ still does ad hoc charters as well as scheduled ones

Yes, as well as regular passenger ones
