Security At MDW

Sat Aug 06, 2005 12:19 am

A while back i was heariing that MDW would be adding more security lines by building/widening the security corridor...are they going to be doing that or is that just a lot of hot air?  Smile

IIRC there were plans to build another bridge over Cicero Ave. in front of the WN counter. They need it. I haven't had huge issues with security times but it is very cramped and ugly for what otherwise is a fantastic airport. Both ORD and MDW are mutually inconvenient for me SO all things being the same price I prefer MDW. Great food and drink and somewhat shorter walks to gates and an very architecturally well conceived building.

I love the new MDW as well...the only problem being the small security area. The airport is a MUCH BETTER improvement over the old, dingy MDW  Smile

A new bridge and security checkpoint over Cicero Avenue is being planning. I believe that the design is complete but the airport is waiting for financing to come through.

man..your telling me..I used to fly out of MDW back in the mid 90's with TZ..back then I used to call it "American Trash Air"....

I stopped using MDW for a while, then I restarted back in 2003..damn was I in for a surprise.... Wow!

its a very nice airport, though I wish there would be more carriers flying out of it instead of WN gangstering most of the gates....

I see the same thing here at SJC..most of the planes flying over my house  biggrin  are WN planes

I think the lines are worst in the morning rush hour and during the evening. Last time I used MDW my flight left around 1:30pm took around 5 minutes to go through security.

I agree that the new MDW terminal is better and very modern. I like the food court area, especially the seating that over looks between concouses A and B. And I also agree that we need more carriers flying out of MDW. At least some international airlines from the Caribbean or Icelandair.  wink

I flew out of MDW once, last week, and it doesn't take a frequent visitor to figure out that they need to rearrange that security area. Those lines arranged like a maze, you don't know which line you're on. Is it too much to ask for the lines to be arranged in a side-by-side manner like in pretty much every other airport?

the only problem with getting more airlines to serve MDW is...no gate space...not only that, MDW is in the situation where they have only one runway in use at a time making it tough to fit flights in.

It's ironic that someone with your username would be pleading for international service at MDW... If I were FI and I were coming to Chicago, I'd consider MDW. Those low A gates are much more convenient than Terminal 5, can handle a 757, and are not so utilized that FI couldn't squeeze a flight or 2 in. Get WN to interline, and away you go... everyone said WN would never codeshare, now we have TZ. Everyone says WN will never interline...

a little bit off topic...but how big was Southwest at MDW around the 1988-1989 period...i just remember thinking to myself that there seemed to be a few of those "ugly" jets at MDW when i flew Midway airlines.  Big grin

Southwest had 4 gates back before Midway Airlines wen't out of business - all at the end of the A concourse. They used those gates heavily, I think to the tune of about 45-50 departures a day total.

On November 13, 1991, when Midway Airlines went out of business, Southwest took over the entire A concourse. In the late 90's they also operated out of B4 and B6 in the old B concourse.

They have really built up over the years at MDW. I don't believe they use their gates to the fullest. I think the reason they have so many presently is to keep competitors out and accomodate all the RON aircraft without having to move them to the hangar pads.
