Threat Against Southwest Plane; Lands At Hobby

Sat Aug 06, 2005 3:29 am

CNN is showing live feed of Southwest 21 at Hobby. It landed after a "threat to the aircraft". 141 people were onboard. More information as it comes....

Air Marshalls genereally would have little reason to fly SWA I would think?

According to CNN, Flt 21 was a 757 flying Dallas-Fort Worth to Houston (IAH) with 145 people on board. GGGGRRRRRR!!!

And I thought flt 21 was Dallas-Love/HOU/Corpus Christi on a 737 with 136+5 crew. Silly me.

Just reported: "It took less than five minutes to get everyone off the plane." I find it interesting that it took less than TWO to get all the pax off the Air France plane a few days ago, yet it takes FIVE to get everyone off a 737???

Maybe they weren't in as much of a hurry since unlike the AF plane, the 737 hadn't crashed, but still, if there was a bomb possibly on board I'd be high-tailin' it outa there.

Anyone get the tail number?

CNN saying HOU FBI is assisting in a bomb sweep and TSA has the lead. Not terrorism. Note found by PAX given to CREW on hop between DAL and HOU.

'cause they are using a single airstair and no chutes deployed.

Correction, routing was DAL to Corpus diverted to HOU.

Just reported: "It took less than five minutes to get everyone off the plane."

That would be impossible as CNN has been showing pax leaving the plane for the past 10 minutes...For whatever reason, they are only allowing one passenger to leave the plane at a time (perhaps they are questioning each passenger before they leave?).

The media really should get its act together concerning airplanes, its really not that difficult.......when the AF A340 had its accident at Toronto, the media was reporting a 737 inbound from Europe, and now SW flies 757s, come on.....

Of course, Southwest did the right thing by getting the aircraft back on the ground as quickly as possible, and security procedures concerning Southwest flights are no different from any other US domestic flight. As for the time it took to evacuate the aircraft, dont count on what the media is saying either.....yes, it took less than 5 minutes, 2 minutes is also less than 5 minutes. So much depends on the circumstances, and please note that the AF cabin crew in Toronto did one amazing job, they are heros and should be recognized as such, they probably saved a lot of lives.

As for this incident, the note thing is problematic.....its usually nothing more than a hoax by a troubled individual....but how can one be sure? I am glad everyone is OK.

Considering it is a criminal investigation and not a plane on fire, I think taking 10 minutes a good thing.

The 2 minute evac of the A343 resulted in injury to some pax. But since the plane was about to explode, there was more urgency...

ANYWAY

Isn't the second time this has happened to WN in a week? Is there some employee with a vendeta at work here? An unhappy AA fan?

With Southwest's open seating policy, I imagine it's difficult to figure out who was seated where.

Was flt# 21 original origin DAL or had it come from somewhere else? If so would not that make the passenger on that flight?

I thought if was coming into HOU and requested to land ASAP not taking off and having to come back to HOU?

It's pretty much a "given" that once there's an accident somewhere, the media will report every non-accident deal (blown tires, weather diversions, bom threats) with the same vigor that the genuinely newsworthy item (the accident) a few days earlier received, even though it doesn't warrant it...

Sad, but true. This mindset usually lasts a week or so, maybe two...

I know that's right! It only takes a second to pull up any airline’s web site to get the facts right about correct routing, times, equipment, etc. Kind of makes you wonder what else the media gets wrong on other topics, doesn’t it?

Anyone know details about that Hertz rent-a-car shuttle bus? I’d reckon Hobby does not have shuttle buses of their own in the event air stairs are used.

OPNL, do you guys (or Houston Airport System) just ring up Hertz and ask to borrow a shuttle bus? Is there any sort of procedure for this?

You know, the really funny thing (and I realize given the situation it's not terribly funny) about this is... Looking at the pictures of the A340 in USA Today and others, "Airbus A340" is clearly visible in the frame, just aft of the L1 door. They wouldn't even have to go to the airline's website... The FAMS must have assigned seats that will allow them a tactical advantage in a hostile situation. Kind of hard to obtain the seat that will give them the advantage without assigned seating.

There was a threat at SAN on a WN flight this afternoon. I heard there was as many as 7 bomb threats throughout our system today, most of which don't seem to be news-worthy. It seems it's someone obviously trying to disrupt SWA operations.

Identifying a FAM is way too easy. Look for the guy in the suit demanding pre-boarding. That is most likely your FAM. Federal regulations require them to wear a suit and tie, and they must be on the plane as passengers board. Yes, I know they are supposed to be undercover, but the way the work rules are set up, it is so easy to spot them. Also, some supervisors threaten their employees by saying they will have to work FAM duty. This actually happened at a DEA office in Boston, where the agents were so afraid of the supervisor in question that they began wearing their bullet proof vests in the office.
