The bases are DAL
. Chances are you will be based in BWI
right out of training. However you will be able to list your preferences of bases in training.
Pay scale is much better than when I started. The majority of us are very happy with the current contract. Assuming you start by Jan 06, you will start at $17.78 per flight hour. Actually we call it per trip, but if I tried to explain how they come up with that, we'd be here all night.
After your 6 month probation period your rate will increase to $18.35 and on your 1 year anniversary it will increase to $22.26
You will also receive a per diem of $2.15 for every hour you are away from you base. So if you check in on Friday at 6am and you finish your 3 day trip on Sunday at 4pm you would receive $2.15 x 58 hours away from base = $124.70 in per diem for that trip. We get paid the 5th and the 20th of every month and our per diem check is always part of the 20th check.
The atmosphere at SWA is pretty laid back. But I guess you already knew that by looking at our uniform. In training they stress that they want you to be yourself on the airplane.
The work rules are pretty fair. The best part of the job is the flexibility. They usually assign you a line with 3 days on and 4 days off however we have unlimited trading ability. For instance, you can trade any 3 day for any other 3 day that is uncovered in open time as many times as you want. Also in some situation, you can move days. As a commuter, this comes in handy a lot. I like to move my trips around so I can work 6 days on and then take 8 or 10 days off.
Management for the most part is pretty nice, but then again like with most companies, it depends who you ask. They have always been nice to me. I got this job in 1994 right out of college. It was supposed to be my "fun" job for a year and then I was gonna get a "real" job related to my major. Then after my year was up, I thought, "this feels like a real job and why should I leave a job that I love and have fun doing".
Im sure you would love it at SWA. You would probably love it at Airtran or JetBlue also. I have friends at both airlines and they also love it. I truly believe that it's all in your attitude and what you make of it.
