A lot like the lower deck, except you're up higher
I flew on the upper deck of a Swissair 747 from Zurich to JFK in 1987. Very nice. Obviously, it's much smaller than the lower cabin. However, thanks to the 3XX, it might be a lot harder to remember which floor you're on!

It depends on what serious plane u are on and what airline u are on but it usually looks like first class with less seats

I don't know how many others share this opinion, but on very long flights, I found the upper deck kinda cramped and it made me feel like I was on a much smaller airplane. Sure you can go downstairs and stretch a bit, but it just feels small when you're sitting down for so long.
Ask why..

Yesterday I flew upperdeck on a Mandarin Airlines 747 from Bangkok to Amsterdam. Much the same (but smaller obviously) as the business class seating downstairs except that it's only a 2+2 seating arrangement. Strangely though, the meal service offered was the same as economy class.....

I hate the upstairs on the 747's. They do not have enough storage space up their. it makes it so difficult. On united the seats are very comforatable up their. How ever the only good part about sitting up stairs is seeing the view when the cockpit door is open. it is amazing. however i would rather sit downstairs.

I've flown upper deck on ANA and Cathay. I prefer it on long trans-pac flights. It's quieter and there are fewer people....usually only the flight attendents, going up and down the aisles. Less foot traffic means fewer disturbances and more sleep.

Some of Air Canada's 747-400 have economy class upper deck seats. I was on one of these airplanes from Vancouver to Hong Kong, I liked it up there much more then on the main deck, although it was lower and not as wide, the upper deck was just as comfortable, and I really liked the storage bins located between the seat and the window, it was like a little bench and came in handy as a head rest when you put your pillow on top.

I have flown quite a few times LHR - JNB on the upper deck with South African Airways and it is certainly quieter at night than the main deck, but I agree that it feels more cramped.
These days I ask for main deck with SAA, though I now prefer to use Virgin's A340 service.

I flew on a BA 747-200 on my way back from LHR-YVR. I loved it up there. The service up there is far superior than on the main deck. I've said it before, but it sort of felt like business class.

I believe that on only BA's 747-200's have the upper deck as economy class where as the 400's are for the rich people!!!

As already stated, probably depends on the airline. Personally, I fly upper deck where possible - usually with Air New Zealand on a -400. There's a lot more room to store baggage, as in addition to the overhead bins, there's a luggage compartment between the window seat and the window where you can store stuff. Plus considering only 2+2 seating, I've never found storage space to be a problem. Also have to agree with previosu posts that it's quieter upstairs - easier to sleep. I certainly recommend it over the lower deck.

I've never found the upper deck on the -400 cramped, but have not flown upper deck on a -200, and can understand that some people may find the smaller space less comfortable.

Its like an entirely first class DC-9 cabin!

I flew on the upper deck on ORD-NRT on a UA 744, its quite nice.

I flew upper deck on a UA SFO-NRT-PEK and back again, and its very nice. The place gets its own FAs and there are these handy personal storage bins if you have a window seat. It is much less claustrophobic in the lower cabin, but not as quaint. You're with so few people up there (compared to the lower deck) that it feels like a class of its own.

When I was at MSP I got to go upstairs on a NW 742 when it was parked at the gate. It seamed like a very well lit walk-in closet. Which isn't bad, but im just saying it is small. Ive never flown on one but it seemed like a personal jet upstairs, especially on the 742 with only 12 people upstairs. It was really windy too so the whole plane was swaying which was really cool. I loved going on that plane. That was my first time on a 747 and so far my only and i will always remember it. Oh and another thing when i was walking up the stairs it was really rickety. It felt like you were walking up a plastic spiral kiddie slide.

It seemed more peaceful when I was up there as there are not as many people. This makes it more comfortable as you feel there is more space. If I had a choice, definately upper!

Japan Airlines have some of their international 747-400's fitted with economy class on the upper deck, and I have the chance to sample that twice (ship no. JA8075 and JA8078).

There were 10 rows of 6-abreast seating, plus washrooms and a galley. On both occasions I flew, only about 20 of those seats were occupied; and yet there were 2 flight attendents up there, so I guess you might say that we were well taken care of!! The atmosphere certainly felt more intimate than in the main deck. Felt like I was flying on a corporate jet, but with the smoothness and stability of a jumbo.

Like most others have observed, it was very very quiet up there. However, due to the curvature of the fuselage at the upper deck level, the windows are tilted at a considerable angle away from you; viewing the outside world is therefore less convenient.

All told, I'd say it's the best place to be to catch some sleep, especially when you have a long overnight flight ahead.

Fun, quiet, like a 737 in first class, and you don't know if you are in the air or on the ground.   Quite hard to tell the difference.
I flew with my dad on a business trip so I got to sit up there

I had twice the opportunity to be in the cockpit of a 747 in-flight.
The first time was in a 747-200 Lufthansa, a flight from BOG-CAR-FRT. It was great, that is the most beautifull thing... the second time was in a 747-400 Lufthansa FRT-MIA, really I don't know what is better, if making love or fly in a 747-400's cockpit. Simply AWSOME!!

I once almost sat in the upper deck of an Air Canada 747-200 years ago when I was a kid in the '70s. But my mom had mistaken the writing on her boarding pass for an upper deck seat, so we had to sit in the economy section in the back half of the main deck! I think the upper deck at that time was part of the first class section. I can't remember much, but I did notice the cabin was a lot smaller than the main section of the 747!

I have to agree with N949WP I too flew on JAL upstairs on a 747 400, same seating arrangement, yup, felt like a coporate jet up there, nice and quiet, better service and those cupboards along the side were great for stretching right out for a snooze. I could live up there*L*
As I used the cupboards to stretch out, I offered my fellow passenger to use both seats next to me, which she did, at one stage I woke up and her feet were on my lap, didnt bother me*L*

That particular flight was on new years day and we were all given a small gift, upstairs there were only about ten of us and I woke a few people up by laughing too loud during the night movie.
