Who's Plane Is This At JFK?

Sun Aug 07, 2005 6:22 am

Across from Term 6 on the other side of the runway there was a plane where the front on it was solid red or reddish orange and going toward the back was white. Anyway, it was where that cargo Icelandair 757 usually is. Now it has to be cargo b/c there no gates there. What do you all think?

N.P.

As utapao noted website I won't..lol
But they do have an extensive Cargo network, particularly in Europe, and can assume only that Icelandair subchartered A300b for JFK cargo ops.

Yea probably TNT, I don't think I've seen them at JFK before though.

I guess Iceair used it for a flight. Sounds cool though.

It actually is Icelandair. They have recently added a B757F that is being operated on behalf of TNT in full TNT colors. Operates on a LGG-KEF-JFK routing.

I was out at JFK yesterday, and I saw this plane sitting at the cargo area where the Icelandair Cargo 757 usually sits. It was indeed the TNT 757. Hard to get a decent picture, though.

I was out at JFK with Josh Akbar and Richard Austen yesterday, and we saw it hanging out on the cargo ramp. Was a nice surprise!

Thanks for the information, Laxintl and 752is.

From TNT's site:

The operation is covered by the notorious and reliable Boeing 737 aircraft.

Something is being lost in translation  Smile

While we're on language topics, is it just me, or does anyone else think that "TNT" is a somewhat odd choice for an airline's name?

The name comes from the original Australian company's initials - "Thomas Nationwide Transport."

Long ago, I worked for one of their US air freight forwarding subsidiary, TNT Express. They'd bought the division off the Bekins moving company (it had been Bekins Express), and later sold us off to a company called "Right O Way", at which point I was laid off. I'm presuimg they in turn got bought up by someone else, since I can't find a website for them. (No great loss, from what I saw of Right-O-Way's operation.)

IIRC, TNT owned half of Ansett at one point, and shared control with News Corp (or one of Murdoch's predecessor corporations, I'm not sure which.) Ansett owned a television network, which Murdoch wanted control of, and both Murdoch and TNT wanted to use Ansett as a "cash cow" to fund other ventures.

TNT has been to JFK before, I've seen their A300 a few times a year or so ago.

If it was sitting at the Icelandic Cargo Terminal, It was probably flying an extra section for Icelandic for one of three reasons. 1: Icelandic has only one 757 cargo aircraft and that aircraft was down for maintenance, 2: Icelandic needed the extra lift and TNT provided it. 3: TNT needed the extra terminal space and Icelandic provided it. You won't see the TU204 at JFK as it isn't Icelandair's.  no
