What Year Did AA & UA Retire Their DC-10s?

Mon Aug 08, 2005 1:52 pm

In the following picture what type of aircraft is that UA in the bottom right corner - - I believe its a 757 but not too sure .. But also in this image are two of UAs DC-10s . . and AA's DC-10 as well . . . Does anyone have the year these aircraft retired for UA and AA?

AA's last DC10 flight was 22 November 2000, on HNL-DFW, IIRC.

While I completely understand the business rationale for retiring these older, less fuel efficient, three-engine aircraft, the DC10s will always be -- in my mind -- one of the finest aircraft that ever flew. Those planes, even in their later years when they were starting to get on in age and show their wear, were still always comfortable, reliable and inviting from my experience. I absolutely loved the DC10 -- it was my favorite plane until the 777 came along -- and I have many fond memories of flying those birds, especially to Hawaii.

By the way, I may be biased (hometown airline), but I still think the DC10 looked better in AA's livery than anyone else's:

UA's final passenger DC-10 was retired in February 2001, while the last freighter retired during Xmas 2000. Last UA DC-10 route was ORD-HNL operated by the small DC-10-30 subfleet.

Your main question has been answered, but i believe the aircraft in the bottom right of the photo is a UA 763. The body looks too fat to be a 757. It could be a 762, but seems too long for that.

The aircraft in the bottom corner is a 763 that belonged to UA. Since it's in Marana, if I remember correctly, it's N645UA.

As for the topic, I believe the last passenger flight of a UA DC-10 was ORD-LAS sometime in February of 2001.

According to airliners.net the last UA DC-10 flight was Feb. 14 2001.

Ship N1858U will be converted for the Royal Dutch Airforce as transporter. it will not be converted to KDC-10 but will be used to add extra pax/cargo capacity.

United's last flights for the DC-10 were ORD-HNL-ORD on February 13th and 14th, 2001, before the actual retirement date of February 15th, 2001.

I'll second both of those statements  bigthumbsup
I'm not from DFW so no hometown bias either.

The DC-10 is a great plane, many many flights on AA DC-10's, yes they do look the best, no hometown or airline bias, check my tagline.  Wink

F.Y.I.-NW is still flying a few if anybody wants one last ride.
I am sure most of you "know this, man", just is case someone doesn't.

I flew a UA DC-10 LAX-JFK in May 1997... I definitely enjoyed the flight, but I do remember the FA getting pissed off at me. I think I was going to the lav during descent, and she got pissed (I was 8 at the time), but otherwise, I'm happy I got to fly a DC-10.
