Northwest Needs Help!

OK, everybody, bash me if you wish, but I could not help but share my experience with everyone on Northwest this week:

Flew First Class LAS-DTW-PHL-DTW-LAS. The r/t sectors between DTW-PHL-DTW were fine, onboard DC-9's which operated flawlessly. No complaints.. Now for the problems:

Being a long time NWA customer, I have grown accustomed to the lack of amenities (audio, video, etc.) on their domestic sectors, regardless of the flight duration. However, NWA has taken lousy service to new levels. Never in my life have I flown across the country in First Class and was never offered ANYTHING from the flight crew. Granted, it was a red eye flight, but from the moment I entered the aircraft and until I arrived at the gate, not once did the cabin crew even so much as offer me or any of the other passengers ANYTHING! Also, keep in mind that the flight was nearly 2 hours late getting out of LAS. All the more reason, the crew should have been more attentive.

Now for the DTW-LAS First Class sector. After arriving from PHL on the connection, we encounter more delays once we arrived at DTW. No big deal, except for the fact that the aircraft came out of maintenance for the DTW-LAS sector. Poor planning on NWA's part for not having an originating flight prepared to leave on time. Being that we were departing from A6 at DTW, there was a food court conveniently located by our gate area. We decided not to eat because both our ticket and the check in monitor said "Meal" for First Class pax and a buyable snack box for economy. I double checked with the agent who confirmed that F/C pax would have a meal. Once aloft, the F/A promptly attended to everyone with beverage service. On the beverage cart was a basket containing cookies, trail mix, nuts & Fritos the F/A held as she served the drinks. From the basket, we were entitled to 2 items to choose from. After taking some nuts, I asked what the meal was. She promptly replied that this what it! Nice job, NWA....I do not want to get into too many details about the other deplorable experiences on this flight (that is being saved for a letter to the airline), but this airline really should be ashamed of themselves for what they call First Class. Before anybody comes to their defense, I am well aware of the tough times they share with other airlines, but cheating customers out of basic service is no excuse. All I ask is that I am told the truth, prior to getting on the a/c...

Northwest has FIRST CLASS on the DC9's? That is something that I didn't know! Now for the rest of it. Most of the time when your flight is late it is not the airlines fault, and 100% of the time it doesn't matter what class you are in. As far as them offering more things when they are delayed, if the aircraft didn't have food on it to begin with its not going to grow any because its late.
Now as far as being in first from DTW to LAS I agree with you, you should have gotten a lot more than 2 snacks. First must have got 2 and econ. 1 snack!?!?!?! (OK that was mean!) I know that most airlines have cut back but when you fly first you should know it. You should get off the aircraft as happy passenger...

Maybe they should direct more of their financial resources to inflight service, instead of spending so much money training scabs and aplying intimidation techniques to morally defeat the mechanics in the event of an strike. Interesting how a passenger can just easily notice when morale is low and management performs poorly.

I flew SFO-DTW late June and it was the same situation. In First Class we recevied a pre-departure beverage (water or orange juice, no alcohol), and that was it. I was upgraded to first. NEVER would I pay for a First Class seat on NW domestic. Entirely a waste of money.

Don't worry after the MX strike NW will have all kinds of extra money to pay for inflight services. They will save a lot of money outsourcing all those jobs

No bashing is called for, just brought up some good points, if it says on your ticket that you were supposed to get a meal, then you should get a meal.

Would have been nice for the Flight Attendants to have told you that when you were seated as you could have gotten back up and grabbed something from the food cart.

As far as the aircraft, who the hell knows what happened, it could replaced another aircraft that broke down.....

Please be as specific as you can, e.g. fligh numbers, names, etc.

Also, let them know regarding

Back in the good ol days (97) I flew first on NWA from MKE-DTW-ORF...it was actually the first time I had ever flown. And I've got to say, the service as far as I can remember was great. MKE-DTW wasn't anything special since it's not that long of a flight. But down to ORF I would finish my drink and literally would blink and someone would be filling it up, we had these great sandwiches, and ALL of the bagged snacks we could take. (not just 2)...fast forward to '05 and you can see where Northwest, and the rest of the industry, has gone...
it's a sad thing, but hey, we're still going to fly regardless

wow, thats a shame. Theres one case of not getting what you pay for. You could have been on a saab for about two hours though... that would have been the icing on the cake eh?

I just flew NW (F) PBI-DTW-MSP-ANC on 7/31 and ANC-PBI on 6 and 7 Aug. I will do a full trip report but here is a summary. I will be honest up front and state that I like NW.

7/31 PBI-DTW (NW 893): A319; Mature but friendly crew with great service and a decent lunch

7/31 DTW-PBI (NW195): A320; Stereotypical very mature flight attendant.-- gruff to say the least but overall a decent flight.

7/31 MSP-ANC (NW845) 7572; Mature but friendly crew with great service and a decent dinner

8/6 ANC-DTW (NW852) 7572; Flight delayed by 1 hr for incoming flight; then delayed because crew was stuck in traffic. Must be a great feeling to have people applaud you entering the gate area. Only preflight beverage offered was water. First beverage offered was with dinner which was served 45 minutes into flight. Very apathetic cabin crew and I was disappointed in the level of service.

8/7 DTW-PBI (NW890) DC930; Enthusiastic cabin crew. Hottest meal I had on any of the flights. Superb flight.

I don't mind the lack of inflight entertainment on NW but it will become an issue with me and others if the type of service provided on my ANC-DTW 8/6 continues.

Just my $0.02!

Jano...I actually filled out a lengthy letter on the Elite Worldperks section of NWA.com. I only gave a very brief description on this forum of what really went on or else I would have taken up too much of everyones time! Believe me, NWA got the full version with all flight details. I got an auto-response today stating that I would be answered in 6 business days.

UAL747DEN...I am one of the least demanding passengers an airline can have in F/C. I am not someone that expects something for nothing. What I do expect is to be treated fairly as an Elite status First Class passenger. I did not expect the airplane to "grow" food as you quoted, but I have never experienced a transcontinental First Class flight where the cabin attendants failed to offer me so much as a glass of water from start to finish. If this is asking too much, then perhaps I am an unreasonable person!

Let's say they achieve the $176mm in annual savings. The first year is nearly gone, due to the $107mm they've already spent hiring scabs and intimidating the skilled workforce that keeps them in the air. Add on the scheduling snafus, unexpected maintenance delays because the scabs don't know what's going on, etc. etc.

NW is fucked. And I'm glad, too. Hopefully other airlines will hire the employees, as they don't deserve to be treated like dogshit by scumbags like Steenland and Co. NWA were actively cheering the demise of UA in Ch. 7. Paybacks are a bitch, aren't they? NW isn't at the Ch. 7 doorstep, but Ch. 11 is right around the corner.

Gee thats real nice to say about other employees, fact is they all have recieved EXTREMELY good offers from NW, in-fact a new one to mechanics that they rejected would have made them about 75K a year (min) plus benefits.

I dont see NW with pom poms singing DIE UA DIE, get your head out of your rear. I dont appreciate that and I doubt that other NW employee's do either, and NW is a lot further from Chapter 11 then you think. Though I have to agree, everyone hates Steenland.
