New BKK Airport Opening 29 September 2005?

Mon Aug 08, 2005 10:39 pm

Hi,

The Thai Airway's website and the Airport Authority of Thailand state that the new BKK airport is expected to open the end of September this year. Does this date apply to all inbound and outbound flights? So if I book my ticket from JFK to BKK mid-October, I will get to land at this airport?  confused

The Suvarnabhumi Airport, which covers 3,200 hectares (7,900 acres), will be able to handle 45 million passengers per year and compete with Singapore's Changi Airport and Malaysia's Kuala Lumpur International Airport, government officials said.

It will be operated by state-run Airports of Thailand, which runs the capital's Don Muang Airport and four other international airports around the country.

45 million passengers per year With a number like that I belive soo!

Also they have quite the extensive website http://www.suvarnabhumiairport.com/th/index.htm

Here are some 3d videos - http://www.suvarnabhumiairport.com/en/3d1en.php
Its funny they show that the A380 will use up the space of two aircraft(747) . You think with the new airport they would build 5 gates or more that could accomidate the A380 without the sacrafice of another gate!

Quite the amazing little project! They do have weekly picture updates!

But to answer your main question all I can say is the above 45 millon PAX, with a number like that and size I would belive so!!

Thanks people,

I did more search and it seems like CX777 is right. According to the Associated Press (quoted on Orbitz.com) website, the airport will be open for commercial flights in March 2006. In the meantime, there will be SOME flights for testing purpose.

Will the airport code for Suvarnabhumi be BKK? And what code will be assigned to Don Muang?

On a related note: Is there an official process for re-allocating airport codes?

Expect further delays, some speculation here said 1 year late, so September 2006.

I'll believe this airport to open when I see it, not when the Thai government says! They've been trying to keep a runway problem under wraps for a little while now, but I think it's starting to come out. The government snuck-in some American company to inspect the runways because they're already developing cracks at the landing thresholds. Word is they told the government the cracks are enough to keep the airport from being certified.

i've heard from some sources that it's possible the airport never opens at all, as they got soo many probelms with the cracks and the whole airport is being built on swamp.
would be hard to see such an airport never opening  Sad

ChrisZRH,

What "sources" are these? I really don't think the result would be as bleak as that. This is 2005 and a lot of money has been spent on this project. I know that Thailand is not the most developed country in Asia but with Itlian-Thai construction group and two other Japanese firms overseeing the project, it is kinda far-fetched to say that it won't open at all. Kansai is built on sand and look what it is today. It is sinking slowly but it's still functional.

What Lufthansa747 said is true, the new BKK airport has been delayed till at least summer of 2006. There was a big thing about it last month i think, where the company installing CTX x-ray machines were delaying the passenger terminal. Anyways, I'll see it to believe it.

(btw, thaiboynmexico, can you click the link on my name and send me a msg, wanna ask u something, gracias)

Quoting ChrisZRH (Reply 9):

From engineering source in Thailand, there were some cracks but in the cement topping, not the structure.

Quoting ChrisZRH (Reply 9):
the whole airport is being built on swamp

The area is the delta of the Chao Praya River. The soil is soft but not a swamp. Just the name of the area is "Nong (large pond) Ngu Hao (cobra)" that make people have bias toward the location.

Quoting Cyberual (Reply 11):

Some of them have arrived and now being installed.

Anyway, the opening of the airport may be delayed for about 1 year as Lufthansa747 said. No one can guarantee the deadline. We hope that they don't rush to open even though it is not ready. Don Muang is still in good shape in my opinion.

According to A2A, Suvarnabhumi is now expected to be delayed until July 2006 (for now anyway!!).

Quote:
After the Thai government threatened in local media reports to "blacklist" airport contractors if Bangkok's long-delayed new Suvarnabhumi international airport is not finished within two months, it has been learned that the date the airport will become operational on a commercial basis was being pushed back from March to July.

New Bangkok Airport Opening Pushed Back to July

As CX Flyboy says, the ICAO code is expected to be VTBS, but it is expected to retain BKK as the IATA code.
