Clipping one jet is already a pretty rare circumstance, but two? Something really must've went wrong.

Could it involve Continental Express flight 3077 to CMH?

I just happened to search the CMH flights, and CO 3077 was scheduled to depart at 5:05pm from EWR but was cancelled.

Bluejackets,

The CMH flight was not one of the 2 affected.
Not sure of the 737 winglet that was involved, but the two RJs were ships 575 and 185...

Whoa, planes are having some "fender benders" today, see post on UA A320 at ORD, two knocked wingtips today.

What is it with aircraft collecting each other at airports over the last few months. Are the airlines having a competition to see who can collect the most points over the financial year?

According to the local news in NY last night, the other plane was a CO 737 bound for PHX. The two that were clipped were RJs.

Did it occur during pushback or taxi?

Especially CO was very font of the wingwalkers. Last few years most of them disappeared as on most airports it's forbidden to have people walk along with the aircraft during pushback.

It probably happened in the corner of the new international pier in Terminal C, it looks a little tight back there especially when they have B777's and B767's on the gates.

For the record, wing walkers are required personnel throughout the Continental system except for Oslo. They have to be in place at the gate during taxi in and must "wing walk" during the entire pushback procedure.

I am not sure where it happened but when we arrived at 200pm the aircraft were sitting on the pad along taxiway Y just off the international concourse.

I think it was flight 325 to CLE. The rebook info after 325 cancelled said "ground damage" as the reason. Conversely, I only found out about it because 312 CLE-EWR, the 1530 departure, cancelled out of the blue, during all the WX delays on monday. It said in flifo the reason was ground damage, but it was what is called a 'balance" cancellation to the flight that cancelled in EWR. I'm pretty darn sure that was the flight. I'll check today, and see if I can find out.

I am not sure where it happened

With COs tight taxiways and the belief that it would be very hard to hit two RJs on a push back, it sounded to me like it had to be a taxiing accident where the RJs were sticking out and the 738 was off centerline, or something like that.

From what I heard the two RJ's were sitting in whats called the "Ball Park area" and the 738 clipped there tails while taxiing. The 738 was heading to CLE.

One of the clipped jets was scheduled to go to LIT. I apparently happened around 12:30 pm Monday, Aug. 8th. You would think they would be more careful, but maybe the PHX bound 737 was in a hurry to get going. I would assume there will be a NTSB and CO internal investigation to figure out what happened and learn from it. At least only tin bent, not humans.

AirRyan, welcome to my Respected Users list. DGS in LIT has had many a/c incidents over the last few months because they pay $7 starting off. You get what you pay for. They let one idiot(on the job for less than a week) ride brakes on an MD88, to get off the plane he jettisoned the escape hatch in the back. Damn plane can't fly with no tail cone!! That particular f*ck-up caused that plane to sit useless for at least three days.

Slider, you sound like you must be in management.

Who's getting paid $9 an hour? The mainline pilot who got too close to the RJs? I'm confused here.

Or were you just ranting about something that wasn't relevant?

Don't RJ pilots get paid $9/hour? I cannot remember the exact figure, but I remember in the book Ask a Pilot the figure is very low.

You are joking, right?

For a standard 40 hour week over 48 weeks a year, that is under $18,000 a year. How many "hours" a year does an RJ pilot work?

You don't even think for one second that RJ pilots get paid less than kindergarten teachers, do you?

Come now...

If I remember the info that protesting COEX pilots were passing out at CLE last year - starting salary per year for an FO was $15-17,000......

Yes, whenever a militant and angry group puts forth numbers that validate their position, they are to be believed as gospel, because history tells us these groups never lie.

That type of info is much like the information put out by the teacher unions during budget time. Worth very little without an audit, and the audits always tell a different story.

Anyway, let's say it is true: that wouldn't be "per year" but "first year" and it wouldn't be "starting salary" but the "minimum possible starting salary for an FO of the least possible experience and qualifications" which is NOT their whole pilot base by any means, but a "select" few who would not be flying the plane yet. But it makes for good propaganda...

Alrighty here, lets get some of the facts straight before this gets off topic...

The 738 was headed for PHX, and the two RJS (575 and 186) were heading to CMH and LIT, respectively....

There was a large group of RJs parked side by side in the 10 run up pad, and the 738 clipped the first two RJs, and was continuing on until the capt. on the first RJ said something over the radio telling the 738 capt. to stop.

FYI, the RJs were waiting for the ground stop to be lifted, so this wasn't the fault of any wing walkers or rampers - and the winglet of the 738 damaged the rudder and horizontal stabilizer of the first aircraft (186, only 4-5 months old) and the horizontal stab. on 575. There's a team from embraer coming up to look at 186 sometime this week. The NTSB reports should be on-line in a week or so.

So before you start blaming rampers, or RJ pilots, it was in fact, the well paid 738 captain at fault.

Now that I've looked into it, you are correct. It was aircraft 270. It returned to the gate after the incident, and a new aircraft #263, originally going BQN-EWR-CLE was aqcuired for the flight to PHX, causing the cancellation of 325 EWR-CLE, and to balance that, 312. CLE-EWR was also cancelled.

Thanks for the correction
