Profitable New Routes From EDI?

Tue Aug 09, 2005 4:46 pm

Hey,

I was in Edinburgh on Sunday for the Start of the Festival and looking around I saw many Chinese/Japanese. In fact, I was sitting next to a Japanese woman and we talking and she said that there were another 29 people with her.

So, I got thinking and came up with:

Would a 3 x weekly flight to HKG from EDI be profitable?

and

Would a 4 x weekly flight to HND from EDI be profitable?

Baring in mind that all of these people have had to fly via AMS or LHR to get here.

Thanks
Mike

You want to fly to Haneda from Edinburgh, theres some wonderful INTERNATIONAL connections available at HND. What do you think about Austrian flying VIE-SNA ?

I've flown over 30 times from EDI, mainly to the outer isles, I don't see many long haul destinations being feasible, especially with Glasgow and less so Prestwick diluting matters.

What Scotland needs is a single main airport, EDI would be the best bet, concentrate the medium/long haul there and you might get some good new routes. BMI talked briefly about EDI-New York with A332s a while back due to the high number of business passengers at EDI compared to Glasgow, but nothing has come of that. Good links to Canada might be a possibility too, Scotland could well benefit from the 787 for those long thin routes, pay attention now Globespan/Air Scotland and we might finally see some good sustained routes, there's been so much talk past and present it would be nice to see something firm up in the future.

EDI has good links to all the London airports which doesn't help, it's easy to go to/from LHR which is a massive hub, but with talk of EDI reaching 20 million passengers in the not too distant future, who knows what might be on the horizon.

There is a Problem with 1 single airport.

EDI is growing. A lot of people want to fly to EDI for the Castle and Hollyrood etc. but GLA is a bigger city therfore more demand for flights their aswell.

Thanks

Hard to say, does an A332 have the legs? That might work...

HA  Smile

What Scotland needed was a major airport constructed 30 years ago in between GLA/PIK and EDI. Outbound traffic from GLA/PIK is considerably greater than EDI due to the greater population in the west, hence all the charter flights. Whereas inbound traffic to EDI is larger for obvious reasons....capital, castle etc. With 1 major airport catering for the whole of central Scotland things would have been so much easier. But hey, they we wouldn't have been able to fight over whos airport is better ;D

Apparenlty ANA were intrested in GLA a few years back...but the only hope of any far east expansion from Scotland in my opinion is if FlyGlobespan eventually purchase 787's.

The David Hume Institute did a report on the feasibility of a Central Scotland airport in 2003:

If I remember correctly, a location near Falkirk was considered, but was sensibly rejected by politicians and others.

hehe,

That'd be hell. Falkirk is on the outskirts of Timbucktoo.

I think the EDI upgrades will be better than a new airport but cost the same.

Thanks
