Customs In Kiev Borispol

Wed Aug 10, 2005 3:50 am

I am flying to KBP next week and think about taking my digital SLR camera with me. I am not a professional photographer, but it is a professional camera with a certain value. Does anyone have any recent experience on how they handle customs? Do I risk having problems when entering or leaving?

There is some information on the airports website:

http://www.airport-borispol.kiev.ua/custom_supervision/

If you click on "Audio and Video" you get this popup:

http://www.airport-borispol.kiev.ua/...ustom_supervision/audio-video.html

It says that any "data carrier" has to be presented for checking in advance. Does anyone have any information if they apply this rule?

They do not apply this rule or only do so in extreme cases. Every country in the world has similar clauses. I doubt if they will ask you any questions of any kind. They would only be interested if you appear to be bringing in equipment to sell. They are very agressive about this at land borders, but not so much at Borispol. If you just have your camera, accessories, film, etc., it will be no problem. If you bring 2-3 cameras, you might get questioned, but even then probably not.

When I was there one woman was being exteremly rude, what I would call 'leading' this American man into admitting he had more cash. When your a foreigner at KBP, at least as of my last experience, they really want to oooze every last bit of cash you have to be cleared (Afay1, you might have been in Ukraine later than I have, so feel free to chime in)
What now?

Only I recommend you that put some clothes in your hand baggage because I travel this year two times to KBP for work and AF and PS had lost my baggage.

Some of the stories from Ukrainian customs are a bit ridiculous. My friend crossed the border by car with his personal diving equipment and was accused of trying to sneak it into the country in order to sell it. So he ended up paying (an admittedly small amount) to "import" his chewed up snorkel and fins. Anything can happen. I took groups of 20 or so people 4 times through KBP customs in 2003 and 2004 and had no problem whatsoever. The customs agents were disinterested to be sure, but no problems. I suppose one takes a chance, but I think, especially given recent events in Ukraine, that there will be no problems. Have a great time!

I'd only be concerned about them "confiscating" it. I know in some Middle East airports, if you bring in stuff that the customs agent thinks his kid would like, they'll take it. That being said, I managed to make it through DOH with approximately $10k in wireless network survey equipment with no questions. I was flagged, but after my coworker showed the agent his stuff (he had all the same stuff I did), they just waved mine through.

I've been many times this and last year through KBP and never had any problem (had my camera on me all the time). They always asked me entering and leaving KBP how much cash I had. Sometime they asked me if I had any present, antique or painting. One think I know, you are not aloud to take their local money out, may be they changed it now.

You can always declare your camera entering the country. When you declare it, make sure to get it stamped by the custom.

They still did ask everybody when I was there in May. It is funny they ask this question on entering the country at a time where I can get as much cash as I want inside the country from the numerous ATMs using my credit and debit cards.

I think this risk would be higher for Ukrainians than for foreigners. After reading the informations on "Audio and Video" on the website I was more concerned they might confiscate my memory cards, since I definitely will have no way to present them in advance for inspection.

Officially declaring on entering and leaving should avoid this problem - I hope  Wink
