Turkish Airlines Orders 8x B737-800s

Wed Aug 10, 2005 3:37 pm

Turkish Airlines has exercised options for 8x B738s. The options are part of an order placed by Turkish in 2004 for 15x B737s.

How perplexing that at the same time as introducing 321s into the fleet they are also exercising their options on the 738.

One might have thought the move to the 321 could have been through some decision to focus more on an all Airbus fleet or some dissatisfaction with the 738 but after this announcement, it seems more and more likely that the Airbus short haul purchase was politically motivated.

Within the industry it is well known that both the Airbus AND Boeing purchases were politically motivated.

Basically Turkey is keen to keep the US and EU very much on side. The US because of defence and NATO - especially post-Iraq, while the strong desire to join the EU has meant that they had to keep them on side too.

Of course!
Erdogan and TK's CEO signed the order during a trip to Europe which topic was the Turkish entry into the EU.

Though the Airbus planes are not bad (irony here, they are very good  Wink), TK had no special need to add new models into their short-haul fleet. B737s were good enough.
On the other hand, the A330 is a wise move. For showing they want to contribute in the EU, did they really need to order A32Xs too? As the press always say "TK ordered XX Airbus airplanes" and as the figure will always be larger with narrowbodies, I think it makes them look better.

If they can make money with these A32Xs, I'm not gonna complain for having new livery-airplane associations around Big grin
The real question is "Would they have done more money by not ordering A32Xs?"
I think noone can answer that.

I think the 330 was the right choice for TK to supplement and eventually replace the 310 on busier medium haul routes as well as long haul routes but the 321 was a decision that didnt make sense, not with the winglet equipped 738s which operate very well from Turkeys hot and high airports and allow thinner routes like IST-MAN, and IST-STN etc to be served non-stop.

The 321 came in when the 738 was already well established within the TK fleet and when outstanding 738 options were planning to be took up. The 321 is therefore a costly 'oddity' in the TK fleet.

Many British airline in the 60/70s were made to make politically motivated decisions on aircraft purchase, often resulting in a far from ideal fleet composition.

The purchase of Airbus short haul, appears to be very similar.

sorry there but this is absolutely wrong....

the 737-400s are falling apart, the RJ100s are also old and loud, they are all being replaced, don't know how you can say what you did, but we at Turkish are quite happy there is a change to the short haul fleet. The -400s are seriously getting old and are being phased out.

Also, tell me how you can say it's politics, Turkish management changes frequently, is there any other company that offers aircraft to our use besides Airbus and Boeing? come on...it's not all politics....

It makes absolutely no sense to operate both A32X and B737NGs, especially both A320 and B738. The huge Airbus narrow body orders were politically motivated most likely.

I was talking about the B738s.

I know about the B734s, I even flew more than once on them.
