Royal Air Maroc To Add Atlanta

Wed Aug 10, 2005 11:58 pm

In one of his recent interview, RAM's CEO said that they are looking into expanding their network in the US within the next few months, mentioning that Atlanta is on the works, since it's Delta's Hub (which is one of RAM's Code-share partner )

Anyone has any more info on that? and is it really a viable choice to add another destination in the US? I would believe so, due to the high growth of transfer passenger to the US/Africa through its casablanca hub. But I might be wrong

I am suprised that Atlanta is being considered by RAM. I am unaware of a large Moroccan populaton in Atlanta or many US tourists to Morocco to warrant another US destination.

JFK does fine for RAM as does Montreal with its French speaking population but Atlanta? I have doubts.

I wonder if RAM are ever going to re-introduce Rio to its network. It was served for many years by 747 but the 763 would surley make Rio more viable, especially considering its location and proximity to Morocco.

Interesting idea. The ATL hub always provides lot's of feed, but whether the demand is actually there for an ATL-CMN flight, I don't know. But I sure as hell wouldn't mind seeing RAM at ATL, especially with their new 787s Big grin .

I don´t think they will ever come back to Rio again, São Paulo would be more feasible. I am sure there is a reasonable Brazil-Morocco traffic, but I have no idea about numbers. It´s quite convenient to get to Morocco via Spain or other European airport. Vasp also used to serve CMN from GRU in the 90´s with MD-11s a few times a week. I believe the routing was GRU-CMN-ATH, but this was one of the first international flights withdrawn when VASP started giving back their MD-11s. Well, I would love to see them here. I have flown RAM 734 Tangier-CMN back in 2001 and I loved the morrocan style inside the aircraft  Wink. About Atlanta, I just wish them luck.

True, I would come to think that a moroccan community in atlanta would be pretty small. but what appears this last few months, is that RAM is shifting its business from O&D to Transfer passengers, They are opening many new routes that would definetly be viable if it was to rely on O&D traffic. Right now they are opening many new routes to subsaharan africa (something like 7 cities since september 2004, plus 4 schedule for later on this year ).

So what I assume is that they are trying to fuel a lot of traffic coming from africa into Europe and North America and vica-versa, which is where Atlanta comes in. And it's been stated many times that it was their new strategy.

As for Rio, I would like to see it happen again, haven't heard anything about it, but the proximity of Lisbon (colonial power) makes it harder to compete on that segment.

ATL is DL's main Hub. No need to have a large Moroccan population there to open a flight !

Do you think there is a large "French population" in ATL that justifies 2XDaily AF flights ?ATL is not a big touristic destination either ... who would like to go to spend holidays in Atlanta ....?

As a DL partner, ATL is just a good "point of entrance" in the U.S as it certainly offers the widest choice of connection throughout the U.S, Canada, and Central America.

Hey, lots of people spend holidays in ATL, just not very many foreigners. The ones that usually come here are from AL, MS, TN, etc, it is the "big-city." You are right in that ATLs connections are the real reason.

Exactly....which should tell you what kind of "tourist destination" Atlanta is.  Yeah sure

I didn't want to offense any "Atlanta lovers"...

What I mean is that ATLANTA is not very famous abroad as a "tourists destination" like Miami, Honolulu, Las Vegas, San Francisco etc...

I'm not. The connecting traffic alone make this worth it. They do have the codeshare with Delta.

Also with the rumor SA is leaving, doesn't suprise me that someone would jump in there to pick that up. It's either them or Kenya.

Another thing, Delta does a lot of the mx for AT's 767 fleet, so with a mx base right there...

Do they serve DTW? I understand the region has a high concentration of Middle Eastern population.

DAYflyer,

There is a indeed a large Middle Eastern population in Detroit especially Palestinian... But RAM doesn't fly there : Morocco is far from being a Middle East country ...

Atlanta could give AT access to a large number of US/North American destinations with short connecting times. AT may fly there to attract more Americans/North Americans to spend their holidays in Morocco and at the same time transfer North Americans and Arabs living in North America via CMN to other North African and Arab destinations. Furthermore, AT could offer good connections to some African destinations presently requiring a change of plane in Europe or elsewhere.
As for Rio (or São Paulo), the large Arab community in Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay may want to use AT to get to North Africa or the Middle East, using an Arab airline.

Smart move on their part. Why not link up with DL? Anyone know what kind of equipment it will be? I presume the 744...

It would probably be a 767--I can't see loads to justify a 744.

isn't RAM in consideration for SkyTeam membership along with Kenya Airways?

Every airline that is somehow cooperating with an existing Skyteam member is considered a future member  Wink . But anyway, regardless of Skyteam, DL and RAM have been cooperating for quite a few years now, since early 2001 IIRC, and both sides seem to be happy with each other, plus as said, DL does maintenance on RAM's 763s. If RAM were actually to join Skyteam, they would be an associate member rather than a full member.

Just because ATL is losing a flight to Africa doesn't justify this scenario. I look to it as a building of a successful operation out of JFK. Similar to DL adding ATL-SVO.

SA leaving ATL is mutually exclusive of AT considering it.
