Gimli Glider Crew - Where Are They Now?

Thu Aug 11, 2005 3:15 am

Does anybody have information on the current situation of the crew on this flight? Air Canada 143? Specially Bob Pearson, the Captain and Maurice Quintal, the First Officer. I would like to know what they're doing now, what happened with their careers. If you need a reminder, in 1983 a new 767 for Air Canada ran out of fuel at 41,000 ft. It was flt 143 bound to Edmonton from YVR and Ottawa I would appreciate any info. on this matter. Thanks

FYI, it's "Gimli"...named after a town in northwestern Ontario. The jet made an emergency landing at the closed Canadian AF base there, because apparently F/O Quintal had been stationed there before going to AC, that's why he chose Gimli. The subject has been discussed *many* times here on a-net as well, so you can search that way as well.

Ship 504 still flies for AC, and Maurice Quintal is now a Captain. Captain Bob Pearson retired several years ago, IIRC.

FYI...Gimli is in central Manitoba, not Northwestern Ontario.

EDIT - ACDC8, you beat me like a red-headed stepchild Big grin

And the airport was not completely closed, only large main runway was closed, and was converted into a dragstrip.

Must be our bush pilot heritage.

And the airport was not completely closed, only large main runway was closed, and was converted into a dragstrip.

What's really unfortunate about this incident is that the main runway wasn't (and isn't) closed. Gimli (YGM), a former RCAF training station, had a pair of parallel runways. The outer one (32L, I believe), had been closed and turned into a car race track - still usable in an emergency, but with a fairly high ridge across the ex-runway (about halfway) where the track runs.

The other runway, 32R, is a perfectly usable 6,000 foot paved runway. I assume that the pilots either didn't see it, or saw it too late to change. If they had landed on 32R, the nose would likely not have collapsed.
The primary function of the design engineer is to make things difficult for the manufacturer and impossible for the AME.

The nose wheel collapsed because it didn't lock. I don't see how runway choice would have affected this?

Slightly off the initial topic, but is the airport still servicible? Has there been any suggestion of retiring C-GAUN to Gimli when its day comes up?

Well, we have a Pe@rson here, but I highly doubt that the marketing volunteer of FR has anything to do with the Pearson from Gimli...

I appreciate all the info. about Canada. I'm actually planning a trip there. However my question was very specific. Google only gave me something about Pearson, so, I'm still asking.

Olympus,

Yes you are right. But you're missing the others, the cabin crew, Desjardins, etc. Thanks anyway.
