Joe Barton's Double Standard On Wright Amdt

Thu Aug 11, 2005 11:53 am

Congressman Joe Barton has been quite adamant in his support of keeping the Wright Amendment in place.

Last week, he spoke before a group of telecommunications folks and discussed his strong support for repealing rural telephone subsidies. As excerpted from the 8/5 Dallas Morning News article:

He gave only a few details about what might be in it, but he said his goal is to expand competition among telephone companies, cable companies and other telecommunications providers.

"I believe in free markets. I believe in individual opportunity. I believe in free-market capitalism. I believe in a level playing field. I believe in the future," said Mr. Barton, speaking to the Metroplex Technology Business Council in Richardson.

"So if you want a telecommunications bill that comes out in this Congress that protects vested interests, preserves the status quo, stymies entrepreneurship, I'm not your guy," he said.

The obvious question then becomes "why doesn't he feel the same way about the Wright Amendment?"

He has a local town hall meeting scheduled during the August congressional recess, and I can't wait to hear his rationale on this glaring contradiction...

He seems to be one of the WORST at talking out of both sides of his mouth.

He also acts like he is a "tree-hugger" yet if I'm not mistaken, he represents all the people in the Midlothian area and this area is one of the major sources of air pollution which affects the air quality in the DFW area due to all the cement factories located in Midlothian. He is ALWAYS defending the cement factories while the general public has tried and tried to make these polluting companies reduce the amount of pollution they spew into the air.

Wright does not usurp the ability of an air carrier to compete in the DFW marketplace. It restricts the venue at which competition can be fielded.

From the 8/10 Dallas Morning News letters to the editor section:

Calling Joe Barton

Re: "Barton seeks repeal of rural service rule – Subsidies are unfair to urban callers, congressman says," by Terry Maxon, Saturday Business story.

I was delighted to read U.S. Rep. Joe Barton's speech to the Metroplex Technology Business Council supporting "free markets ... individual opportunity ... free-market capitalism ... and a level playing field."

Based on those professions, certainly he will support the repeal of the Wright amendment, eh?

You realize the contradiction inherent in that statement, right?  Yeah sure

Free markets that have conditions and other impediments really aren't "free"...

But, back to the topic, I'm interested in hearing Barton's explanation of his double-speak....

I'm assuming you mean paragraph two. Perhaps this would be a contradiction if you consider local airports as competitors. But, as been expounded upon by 7E7, and mentioned by myself and others, multi airports systems are intended to complement each other. Wright attempted to preserve the intended complementary function of DAL vis-a-vis DFW.

Quoting OPNLguy (Reply 9):
Free markets that have conditions and other impediments really aren't "free"...

...yet somehow this current effort to re-open the present-day DAL to long haul exemplifies the free market at work?

What is really funny about this thread? Do you know who the Senate sponsor of the Telecom Bill is?

Ever hear of this guy called Ensign?

Before you blast Barton go and read what is at stake first. Removing Federal Subsidies from the Rural Telecoms is designed to force them to sell access to thier Copper so rural residents will have ADSL, ViOP and newer technologies available to them.

Sorry, but this thread isn't about the merits of the telcom bill, it's about Barton's double standard when it comes free-market competition.

Nice try on trying to get the thread off on a meaningless tangent...

RE: A New Twist On The Wright Amendment Debate

Fri Aug 12, 2005 12:48 am

Why is it so hard for you to understand that as long as the airlines depend upon the public domain for facitlities to operate from there is no such thing as a complete free market for airlines? Regulation concerning to and where you can fly from is still present even after the Airline Dergulation Act.

Now there's the biggest piece of Southwest propoganda I've heard.

Wright was intended to restrict operations out of Love Field -- which would have been closed to commercial traffic except for Southwest's legal manuverings -- to an area a bit larger than Southwest's scope of operation in the regulated era.

There was no "complementary" about it. Love wasn't supposed to have commercial traffic.

Steve,
Don't misread my statement which I purposely moderated. While I'm anti-Wright, I also am diametrically opposed to the current effort to repeal Wright since it would convey a market to the potential exclusion of others.
