Qantas Offered 20% Discount To Buy A340-500's

Wed May 03, 2000 7:37 am

Now, I am no expert on the Australian Aviation industry but I think this announcement doesn't guarantee that Qantas will go with the 777-200LR.
I still think that Qantas probably with stay with boeing, but I was wondering what other people thought.

As said before Airbus is really trying to get customers for its A340NGs and A3XXs. While the likelihood of Qantas ordering Airbus is slim it just may happen. What I think Airbus is trying to do is make it so Boeing has to match them and henceforth make no money on the deal.

What are you kidding me? Such discounts are commonplace...why do think there is such a fight when CX or whoever wants to order Airbus or Boeing?

On a launch order like the 777LR Boeing would probably sell the planes to break even or maybe even lose some money just to try to get some orders.

I really don't think that Airbus will win this order. Qantas has tested the A3XX "Economics" on its routes before and stated that it was only 8% more efficient than their current 747-400s. Both companies are really fighting for this order but with QF already operating the 737-300, 737-400, 767-200, 767-300, 747-200, 747-300, 747SP and 747-400 Boeing definately has a very large upperhand. Let us not forget that Qantas was on the 777 design team.

A discount of 20% is apparently not unusual. I have heard of many deals meeting or exceeding these amounts. I personally would like to see a Qantas 777 flying, but an A345 would be nice too. There is a lot of discounting going on now, which means lower prices to the airlines.

744ER

Wed May 03, 2000 8:57 am

With regard to CX747's post above, the biggest seat cost advantage Airbus is willing to own up to now for the A3XX v. 744 is 13%. For the past 3 years, the Airbus claim was 20%!!! If the seat cost advantage is 8%-13%, it would not take much to equal those figures or come very close. The blended winglets could add 3%-5% advantage (based upon early estimates as well as improvements to other models of aircraft). Add the trailing edge wedge, and some engine improvements (the engines are evolving constantly) and boom!!!, you have a great bird!!! Last, figure you don't have $12 Billion to $13 Billion in development costs, and it appears you will have a hell of a bargain in the 744ER. I think it is important for all of us to see Airbus is careful to use current the 744 with no modifications in comparisons with it's A3XX. All of the 744ER mods are simple and inexpensive (winglets, trailing edge wedge, any supplemental tanks, and updated PW4000's, CF6-80C's or Trents).

Just cos they were on the design team means nothing.

They are also on the A3XX design team. But as you seem to say they dont want that aircraft, it obviously means nothing!

Doesnt mean I like any of it though!

I think Airbus would even go further with their discount just to win a customer who is one of the worlds leading airlines.
That they only have Boeings right now and that they were on the 777 design team means absolutely nothing - it could even be a sign that they can get a neverbeforeseen bargain if they go for the A340NG. Especially now that Airbus announced a further development of their products to surpass the 777X specifications.
There were enough "120%-Boeing" customers before who changed.
But I fully agree with you, Navion. I don´t think its impossible for Boeing to develop a 747X with around the same seatmile costs as the A3XX - for considerably less money, in a shorter time.
I would not bet on it - but for me it sounds far more logical to expect a QF widebody fleetmix of 747X and A340NG in 2010 than A3XX and 777NGs.

QF offered 20% dicsount for A34NG?? plezzzzz.

I say that QF will likely order the 777LRs.

Airbus just wants to find a couple of backdoor ways to hook onto QANTAS, not fair competition for Boeing.

Boeing shall then slash %50 off price of 777-LRs. whatever Boeing will need to fight to win this order.

by the way, QANTAS is look to announce an order for 737Ng by August.!!!!
