Any Airlines Which Hire At 17?

Fri Aug 12, 2005 10:46 am

Hey, as most of you know im 17...I graduated high school in three years, and have been accepted into flight school...I would really like to pursue an airline job in the near future, but it seems they all hire at 18...In reality, Im not looking for an airline that hires at 17, just as to anyone knows anything, or has ever heard of people getting in early? All I hear about is that its insurance related, well jeez, if it is, why can't my parents sign a consent, or me sign a contract/wavier protecting the airline if I get hurt, you think they would at least offer some alternative especially if the company really wanted to hire me. If anyone can provide any information, please email me (profile) and give me some advice...I've applied at a couple and have recieved interview offers... but I'll go more into depth with that later...thanks for any information.

They won't even hire like a baggage ramper or something like that at 17.....it probably is becasue of safety issues, and if you'll be working with carts, towing vehicles etc...they might not allow someone who is younger than 18 or 21 to operate heavy machinery

Insurance and federal work regulations will keep them from hiring anyone under 18. Try an FBO at a local airport, they always need people to wash airplanes, cut grass, etc. Airlines, however, won't hire you.

Not to be offensive or anything, but if you graduated high school a year early, aren't you going to college?

Now, at 18 you can be a gate agent for most airlines. And some airlines (just a few) hire flight attendants at 18, some at 19 and then the rest - and majority - at 21.

No way you are going to get in with an airline.

You could maybe work for an airport picking up wheelchairs, trash, old people, or work an information desk.

You can possibly be an intern, but nothing more if you are under 17. Plus, you wouldn't be working anywhere that requires AOA access. You need to be at least 18 to even apply for AOA access for work.

Of course not. You have to be an adult.

Good luck in school!

Airlines like to see some kind of real work experience when they are seeking potential candidates. An exception might be someone that is applying for a skilled office position that recently recieved their college degree. Even then, airlines look for some type of internship experience. Go to college, get some job experience then apply. The airlines will be there later and patience is a virtue. If you absolutely can not wait that long then get a job and apply for a front line, entry level position when you turn 18.

GQ hires those with High School diplomas (I was 17 when I graduated High School) or (figures) an 18 yr old with a GED.

Take other's advice and get a job at an FBO. Here you only need a licenece and go through a few traning class' on how to work a ramp etc. but at $15 an hour it's a sweet deal! No real perks other than aircraft rentals and lessons.

Take care,

Matt

As you grow up and enter the workforce, you will quickly learn that it's not all about you. I doubt that an airline gives much of a damn about insurance for you getting injured. I am sure they care much more about you doing something that injured someone else and having difficulty with their insurance because you are under 18. I also highly doubt that anyone will want to hire you so badly that they'll incur extra costs. You are only 17 and have nothing or very little to demonstrate about your work skills and ethic.

Like AA757first I'll also say...why aren't you going to university? You should have something to fall back on for times when the airline industry is not doing well economically. You'll see many of the pilots on here saying that a university degree is a very good idea.
But that was when I ruled the world
