Why The Increase In BOS-Europe Flights?

Being from Boston I am lucky to spot a wide variety of traffic in and out of Logan Airport. I have noticed that there are more and more transatlantic flights both on american and european carriers. For example, three BA flights daily to LHR, two Virgin, two Swissair, two Lufthansa, Air France, Alitalia, two Aer Lingus, Sabena, Olympic in addition to United, American, Northwest/KLM to various points in Europe.

I am intrigued, can anybody explain the reason for this increase? Where is the demand coming from for these additional flights?

Doesn't TAP Air Portugal fly to Logan also?

As fares drop, and business increases, it makes it easier of business travellers to fly to Europe, and families to travel to Europe. During the winter the following to Europe

Aer Lingus-daily to Dublin/Shannon
Air France-daily to Paris-CDG
Air Portugal- 2x-weekly to Lisbon via Ponta Delgada
British Airways- 21x-weekly (thrice daily) to London Heathrow
Icelandair- daily flights to Keflavík
Olympic Airways- twice weekly to Athens
Swissair- daily to Zürich
SABENA-daily to Brussels
Virgin Atlantic-daily to London Gatwick
Northwest/KLM-daily to Amsterdam
American- 2x daily to Heathrow, 1x daily to Paris CDG
United- daily to London Heathrow

During the Summer increased schedules include:
Aer Lingus: 5 weekly flights to Shannon
Air France: 5 weekly flights to Paris CDG
TAP Air Portugal: thrice weekly to Lisbon via Ponta Delgada
Olympic: schedule changes to thrice weekly via Manchester, UK
Swissair: second daily flight added

Where is Delta in your discussion? DL has planned a MAJOR investment in Boston for trans-Atlanatic service, in addition to partner Air France. Boston is a natural! Great location/gateway, high tech businesses, etc... Watch out for more to come, especially since JFK & EWR are over-capacity.

Fragmentation

It's all about fragmentation. No longer will New Englanders schlep down to NYC or even worse, DC to fly across the pond. Both Boeing and Airbus make jets that are ranged well and right-sized for such cities as Boston (as in large, but not a NYC or LA sized city) to fly to various European and even Asian markets.

Also, Boston is the country's absolute best positioned big city for transatlantic travel. All flights from the east coast to Europe fly over Boston anyways, so geographically it is a great waypoint. Also, with a booming industry loaded with techs (beginning to rival Silicon Valley out near route 128), biotechs in Cambridge, financials downtown, and other industry throughout the area, it is a great O/D market as well.

Delta is planning a MAJOR (!) expansion in the Boston market. At this point, USAir has the largest market share out of BOS but Delta is in the process of making a huge expansion into the market, of course becoming the predominant carrier into that airport.

Don't forget Boston is also home to many world renowned colleges and universites that attract students from all over the world.

I could be here all day naming which ones but obviously there is Harvard, MIT, Boston College (my alma mater)  

So naturally you are going to see a demand for international travel here in Boston, plus it is known as the "Hub of the Universe"!

I think you would see alot more international travel here in Boston, only problem is that Logan is severely lacking in the size to accomadate everyone that wants to fly here. They are addressing the issue with a huge renovation and a new Delta facility (as Delta 737 alluded to), but it is still pitifully smaller than it should be.

As someone who lives exactly between BOS and NYC, I choose BOS -- by far -- for my trans-Atlantic journeys. Despite the hassle of the Big Dig, it's easier to get to Logan than Kennedy. I think many folks who can use either airport are looking at BOS, at least from my vantage point.

Delta Vs. USAirways

While USAirways has more flights than Delta out of Boston, Delta carries the most passengers out of Boston. That, I believe, would make Delta the Boston market share leader. At least that's what it said in a recent edition of the Delta inflight magazine "Sky."

Hi,
First of all, Air France will have 2 daily nonstops between BOS and CDG daily this summer, both on 767-300 ER aircraft. I also can't wait until the new Terminal A (Delta terminal) opens at Boston. Then I won't be able to have to take pretty much US Airways and American pictures, but some of my favorite airline!
