Maybe he wanted to leave while there was still an ATA for him to leave. There are bad rumors swirling out of that place. ATA was his baby, and nobody wants to see their baby die. Good luck in your retirement.

Management has said to ALPA that without major concessions they won't make it until the end of the year.

Haven't the pilots already given major concessions? Perhaps its time for ATA to close down? I mean they are a fraction of what they used to be already.

I have such mixed feelings about J. George Michelsons. I worked for ATA from 1991 to 1995 and feel that the company did not treat its employees well. When George and his fellow Senior Officers would come to our base for a company meetings, George would become angry and defensive whenever my colleagues and I would voice our concerns about abusive working conditions.

We were the very first work group at ATA to vote in a union after our repeated concerns fell on deaf ears. I am very proud of the precedent that we set and the work we did to secure the very first collective bargaining agreement at ATA. The pilots and mechanics later followed the flight attendants in organizing.

I believe that our efforts paved the way for a better quality of life for future ATA employees. It was gratifying to see work rules implemented that prevented future abuses by ATA's crew scheduling department, and also provided them a framework with which to operate by.

As much as I despised George at the time, I have come to respect his ambition and his professional accomplishments. He led ATA from a one airplane travel club to becoming the nation's 10th largest airline at one point. That is a noble accomplishment. While I did not respect ATA's corporate culture, George symbolizes the great American entrepreneurial spirit. I hope that for his own sake, George is able to retire with something to show for his years of hard work and his dedication to the airline that he founded.

I have to say I think it was time for him to go. He did good at the beginning but these last few years I think it was just an ego game with him. He was very interesting I went to a meeting with him once and he would go off on these tangents about nothing. Then when one would bring up the situation ATA was in he would get angry and blame John Tauge. I don't think its a big loss for ATA. Well except for the fact that I am sure he will draw some sort of pension or something from ATA.

He was the Chairman of the Board when Tague launched into his crazy expansion scheme and could have stopped him at any time. His bad judgment was partly to blame for the demise of ATA. It's always easy to be a great entrepreneur on other people's money. George should have stuck to his knitting (charter) but now its too late to go back.

i do not think that expension plan was bad, i think that decision of buying only 737-800 and 753 is to blame. I personally belive that if ATA will buy mix of 737-700, 737-800 and maybe 737-900 instead of 752 ATA will be in much better situation then it is know. PIT,MIA were almost never full, not even close to be full with 737-800. That just one of examples ...

I have to agree with you.. I think TZ has too much capacity on some of their routes. I'm glad to see you guys picking up some "smaller" aircraft for use on the thinner routes. When are the -300's supposed to come online?

I think that the codeshare will help fill up the MIA flights. I can't wait for the codeshare to expand internationally..
Maintain 2300 until Boiler, cleared for the VOR-A approach, report BATLE inbound..
