Qantas SFO Media Blitz Begins Today

Mon Aug 15, 2005 3:38 pm

As mentioned in another thread. QF will begin 3x weekly nonstop service SYD-SFO.

The media push has started this weekend with several colour ads in Bay Area newspapers (SF Chronicle, Contra Costa Times, San Jose Mercury News) announcing the service as well as the introductory fare of USD798 round-trip.
Radio adds will begin this week as well, and a presentation and sales meeting for area travel sgents will be held this week in San Francisco.

The adds are seriously trying to convey that QF's service to SYD will be like none other currently available out of SFO (eg, United): extra legroom, personnnel seat back entertainment, three choices of inflight meals, etc., and onward connections to New Zealand, Bali, and other South East Asian destinations.

QF servied SFO previously, I beleive in the 80's. I remember seeing their counter in the old international terminal which was shared with BA. Does anyone remember their schedule and frequency back them. I assume services were with 747. Was the flight nonstop or via LAX, HNL?

But anyway

This new route will totally make SFO spotters a dream come true, having QF aircraft in SFO. Wonder if this new service could become daily in a few years

True, but the thing about nice new aircraft is they don't stay nice and new for long.

Also, as much as I love NZ, they really are just catching up with everyone else. Granted they will offer what sounds like a 'better' product with 34" pitch in economy, premium economy and video on demand. The NZ option for AUS - SFO flights will really only be an option to MEL and BNE originating passengers, and these can fly direct to LAX on QF and UA and connect to wherever from there. It appears that QF has put a dent in NZs plans here, but that was to be expected.

All I say is good luck to QF and NZ. I want them to both do well.

QF servered SFO from 1954 to at least 1983. The route was SYD-NAN-HNL-SFO-NYC-LHR. Services started with Lockheed Connies, then B707-138, B707-338 giving way to B742 & 767 aircraft. NAN was started to be dropped in the 70s and was gone some years later. AFAIK service was never non stop.(Perhaps right at the end?).

Frequency to SFO was daily by the 1970s

SFO was also QFs North American business office for many years.

It is great to see that QF is returning to SFO

Kevin Costner once said in some trashy film "build it and they will come", this in my opinion is what QF needs to do, don't just take the cream (LHR and LAX) but identify future growth markets and develope them.

But one has to ask the question is it premptive against SQ entering the Pacific market?

Yes I know the Australian Govt has said no for the moment, but QF has increased BNE - LAX They are restarting services to SFO and eventually to YVR so ineffect they are covering the main markets to and from Oz across the Pacific . . good business sense but a pain for competion

Cheers

I think when they ceased services last time, the routing was SYD-HNL-SFO.

My last QF SYD-SFO flight was in early '88 and indeed via HNL.

An aside... at that time QF were short of A/C and were chartering planes from Tower and Martinair amongst others... but to avoid the bad PR at home these planes rarely came closer than NAN. QF flights would shuttle pax out of the country, once "out of sight" they would change planes. I have photos of our "companion" Tower/QF flight flying almost along side about an hour West of HNL.

I hope the route is such a success that we see direct QF MEL-SFO in the not too distant future. QF are increasing their direct MEL-LAX flights from one a day to about 10 a week and the A380 will fly to LAX from MEL as well, so there is growing demand from MEL, even with ANZ and UA flying to the US from here as well.

Quoting B787 (Reply 3):
The NZ option for AUS - SFO flights will really only be an option to MEL and BNE originating passengers

This is true, although I would much rather take an international QF flight to SYD and change there for the direct flight to SFO than travel to either LAX or anywhere in NZ - sorry, but I just prefer QF to ANZ and UA.

Don't UA have seat back entertainment in their transpacific 744s for economy passengers at all? When the A380s begin flying the route, UA will look really shabby in comparison. I am not gloating over this because even though I would not fly with them, I would not like to see UA exit the route either.

Legroom in which cabin? NZ will win in the J class stakes. Down back its all a bit blurred. NZ has the best pemium economy, then UA has it's economy plus, followed by UA/QF/NZ all much of a muchness at 31-32" for standard steerage. (NZ is only keeping 34" pitch on its 744's) QF and UA have a true F class though.

Which service is "better" will come down to personal preference. Glad to see QF expanding.

BTW has QF introduced 3 meal choices, when ever I've flown down back it always been 2 choices?

SFO would appear problematic for QF and you can see why they wouldn't have done it before. San Francisco as a gateway to the US is bound to be much more popular than Los Angeles and it will become the first option for many Australians. with such a simple high profit scenario 5 747's per day up into one city against UA and NZ (prior to upgrade) with if i'm right similar airfares to the kangaroo route any change might be popular with A.net aussies but may not be with the QF CFO.

I went to Australia in 1987 and flew SFO-SYD-SFO nonstop and the service was fabulous. In either February or March, 2006 I am going back to SYD. I was going to layover in CA a few days before flying out. I really wasnt too keen on LA, so I am delighted to hear QF is returning to SFO. Does anybody know the exact date the service will start? This is indeed wonderful news. Good news would be even better if, by chance, they have a sale on business class. I might even be tempted to really splurge.

Who knows about the three meal choices, but currently we serve two meal choices, with two MAIN meals served during the flight, and a snack bag after first meal service.

The things that will vary us from the competition is all the 'little' things we give to our passengers in Y/C especially.
For example: Amenity Kits, Menus...

We are a great carrier, but there are just somethings with this airline that are far from perfect. We dont even do a bar following our main meal choices.

Also, AVOD is out on two aircrafts currently, and they are flying the LHR route... 747-400 aircraft that is. If you like i will grab regos for you. From the top of my head VH-OJL and VH-OJS.

AVOD series two is being released on A330-300 aircraft as we speak.

Also 2 767-300 are now upgraded to newer cabins, IFE etc...

Cheers

I look forward to travelling QF home to Oz at the end of the year. Hopefully the fares will be reasonable after Dec 15 and before Jan 15, so that I don't have to travel FJ again (usually for me $100 - 200 cheaper than QF or NZ). Not that I dislike NAN or the FJ service, but that 4 - 5 h layover at 5 am is difficult.

Not that related, but didn't QF serve LA from CNS in the early '90's (via HNL)?

Sorry, Im AKL based Longhaul flight attendant for Qantas.

767 Upgrade includes:

All aircrafts are to recieve new J/C seats 'Millenium seats' i believe (Installed on A330-200 aircraft).

No PTV's in J/C anymore, only Personal Sony DVD players are to be handed out after take off.

Y/C upgrade includes:
New Seats, IFE upgraded to that of A330 Cabins, ie. Flip down screens every 4 rows. Y/C interior such as walls will be cleaned and carpet refurbished.

I donot have the Regos at the moment, but i shall find them in my cabin crew news if you wish.

AVOD stands for: Audio, visual ondemand ie. Fast forward, Rewind, Pause, Play Stop etc when you like. Not like at present where our aircrafts have cycles of every 2hrs 30mins.

An extra 5 movie channels will be avaliable but on Series two i hear their is more channels to choose from.
I hope that makes more sense.

Cheers
AirNewZealand...

PS: In regards to Amenity Kits/Menus- Yes i am refering to QF.

Thanks alot.

Yea saw a while ago QF are converting some B763s to a domestic 30/224 config OGE/OGF are the 2 B763s listed in that config they must be the ones you are talking about??

In the Y cabin what are the "new seats"? ATM all B763s have the blue slimline Y class seat what are they being replaced with?

Will all B763s including the RR ZX* series get the upgrade?

It will be nice to see the LCD flip down screens in the B763 Y class cabin.

Once again thanks.

QF did not go LAX-SYD nonstop with the 743 at the time due to being slightly out of range to carry a full load on a 743. SFO is surprisingly closer, 60nm. So QF and UA both went direct SYD-SFO. Though you'd think they could have done LAX for only 60nm. It was also not possible to fly MEL-SFO nonstop at over 6800nm, so there was a UA MEL-SYD-SFO flight. When I was returning from MEL on QF, due to some kind of problem, the QF and UA MEL-SYD legs were combined onto one plane, since UA usually flew that leg mostly empty as they could only book it through. That day it operated as a UA and a QF flight.

Quoting IADLHR (Reply 16):

Yep, me too, for the bicentennial celebration. We were EWR-SFO-SYD, then MEL-SYD-SFO-EWR using QF and AA.

I found service in business class to be underwhelming, with food not as good as promised by their marketing (and by no means available any time you want like they implied), and the F/As disappearing for hours on end without any service or even water.

Hey all, remember one key point. QF is going to be carrying passengers beyond SFO. There is not enough traffic locally to support two flights to SYD from SFO with local traffic, especially if QF eventually goes daily. Right now, UA and NZ pretty much own it and QF will have a battle on their hands, because AA is no where near as strong at SFO as they are at LAX, and QF does very well at LAX because of the feed traffic provided by AA from a lot of points into LAX to feed to the QF flights going down under. That won't happen in SFO unless AA really grows in SFO and that will be tough slogging against UA, unless of course UA goes completely in the toilet (which I seriously doubt, at least for now).

It will be one heck of a competitive battle and the loser here will be United. Their product is so far behind QF and NZ and it will take a lot of investment to bring the ultra long haul product up to the standard of the other two that one begins to wonder if a different aircraft would work better for UA on that route than the -400. Of course, they don't have an aircraft that can go that far, at least not yet, but I would imagine that Boeing would not mind having United be one of the first carriers to have the 777LR, which would provide them the opportunity to provide a much better on board product with the range to do more than just west coast to Sydney. However, that takes a bit of bravado imagination...they just don't have it.

Lets see how it rolls out.

QANTASforever and 777ER lwhat do you say you both take a deep breath and call a truce. You have both made good points. The reality a strong QF and strong NZ is good for both of our countries, and our region, regardles. This is a thread about Qantas starting flights into SFO, sure discuss other operators, but keep it in perspective.

If we're going to get into some trans-tasman chest beating then let's discuss the Rugby and how the All Blacks only won on Saturday becasue the Wallabies had a 1/4 strength team due to injuries.....  cheeky  Sorry I'm trying to lighten the mood.

Anyway back onto the topic. If Qantas order new ac in the 777/787/A340/A350 categories, will we see any of these ac types on the AUS - US routes? Perhaps a way to build frequency.
