I would bet that that lettering actualy says MD-83

The old M.D. font was very difficult to read from a distance like this. The 8 and the 3 numerals look identical from a distance.

Could in fact be an 8 on the engine cowl. Spanair may have needed an engine covering and IB had one avail - they do fly -88s...

just a thought.

That too is possible.
Looking at the rest of the spanair MD80 fleet they all have the spanair logo in that place, including the aircraft picture up to April 05 as far as I could tell.
