Santa Barbara Airlines Hydraulic Failure

Wed Aug 17, 2005 10:22 am

CNN just reported that a Santa Barbara Airlines airplane has reported hydraulic problems en route to Managua, and is being diverted to San Salvador. More details to follow.
Anyone have any info on this?

Santa Barbara is a Venezuelan airline. Apparently it is being diverted to San Salvador now. 220 pax on board, so I'm assuming it's their 757.

Cargo is based out of MCO I believe, but PAX not too sure, somewhere in Venezuela? maybe CCS?

They fly all over Latin America, Mexico, the Caribbean and Europe.

They have cargo ops as well - http://www.sbairlinescargo.com/

The airplane has apparently just landed safely at SAL.

CNN says it was covering the CCS-MGA route. Anyone have any info on when this route started? It doesn't even show on the S8 page!

Santa Barbara plane to Managua, there must be a mistake. Santa Barbara doesnt fly to Managua. Not even their cargo affiliate. I don't think it is a charter, since they only have one 752 for their CCS-MIA 2X daily flights. Their 727s fly to UIO/GYE from CCS and both their DC10s are used to MAD and TFN.

Any links to this story? This doesn't make any sense at all.

Just checked Venezuelan media. Looks like indeed it was a Santa Barbara plane with 220 people on board. It was a CHARTER flight CCS-MGA. I wonder which plane they used for that charter, maybe on of their DC10s?

It was taking some youths home to their central american homes. Those youths had participated in the Youth Festival (Left Wing-Socialist-Communist-Anti Imperialism) forum that took place here in Caracas between August 7 and August 15. Here are the countries of origin of the pax:

Nicaragua: 98 pax
El Salvador: 43 pax
Costa Rica: 28 pax
Honduras: 14 pax
Guatemala: 18 pax

Ok here is the real deal:

It was indeed a DC-10. YV-1052C. It was trying to land in MGA but bad weather forced the diversion to SAL. The hydraulic failure was minor and was not the reason of the diversion. Santa Barbara's CEO explained that the crew chose to divert to SAL because they needed a larger runway and better weather to land the DC-10. The plane was Chartered by the Venezuelan Govt.... what a way to waste my taxpayer money, bringing Central American communists for a 1 week vacation in Caracas. Fuck Chavez.

Does SAL receive widebodies? If not, this is a great chance for spotters to shoot a DC-10 in SAL. Hurry up!
