Update on weather impacts and runway construction at Halifax International Airport

Halifax International Airport Authority (HIAA) has embarked on a major airfield reconstruction program. This work, which includes upgrades to airfield pavement and lighting, is vital to maintaining the integrity and operation of the airports runways, to ensure safety and meet regulatory standards.

This five month long project started in May and will conclude in October. The work is done in a complex sequence, and in late June, the project entered a critical four-week period, as work took place at the intersection of our two runways. This rendered navigational aids unavailable to assist pilots in landing during times of reduced visibility (fog, low cloud cover, etc.).

The impact of the construction was significantly compounded by poor weather conditions and created major disruptions to flights in July. The decision around the timing of this construction was not taken lightly. The extensive electrical and paving work needed to be completed during the summer months when conditions are suitable for this type of work.

HIAA regrets the inconvenience caused to passengers.

The work on the intersection is now complete and the project has entered phase three. This phase is focused on a portion of the main runway (06/24), and includes complex electrical and paving work, resulting in the need to shorten the landing area of this runway. Runway 15/33 remains open with its full Category 1 landing capabilities.

Based on historic Environment Canada weather data, as we move into August, the frequency of westerly winds that favour runway 15/33 increases. However strong southerly winds are possible this time of year and could impact the ability for flights to land or takeoff on this runway (15/33). Therefore poor visibility or strong southerly crosswinds could impact flights at Halifax International Airport, causing delays, diversions or cancellations throughout this phase of construction. This year’s work is expected to be complete in early October.

Going forward, we will continue to monitor weather forecasts and provide the traveling public and our industry partners with up-to-date information until this year’s construction is complete

Below are the answers to some frequently asked questions about the project and its impact on operations.
Where am I going, and why am I in this handbasket?
