What Is The Shortest Flight BA Have The 747 On?

Fri Aug 19, 2005 1:49 am

I wonder, what is the shortest flight the 747 has been used on by BA, not counting special charters or when they flew the 400 to LIS for football fans. Have they ever been used on LHR-CDG or the shuttle routes?

GIG to GRU, around 45 mins flying time... don't know about freedom rights on it though. The plane then continues on to LHR.

It used to operate between BAH and DOH, but no more.

When I flew LHR-CAI-LHR with BA, it took about 4 hours each way.

BA have used the 744 on the LHR-MAN shuttle a few times, very rare though. Flight time approx. 30 minutes.

Sometimes at the LHR-AMS route or the Gatwick-Ams route.

Here a picture of a British Airways 747-400 at Amsterdam.

According to this month's BA inflight magazine, you're correct, this is the current shortest flight, whilst SIN-LHR is the longest.

British Airways operated a LAX-SAN segment years ago. I don't think they were allowed local traffic.

Thanks, but i'l re-phrase the question, what is the shortest flight that BA have used the 747 on in NORMAL service, even with a sun for high demand, out of the UK and not on 5th freedom ie WITHIN another country.

I tried ask.com but it redirected me to this forum when this question was posed to the group before.

I love 747 threads!

In 1989, BA used 744 daily LON-PHL-PIT. I wonder if PHL-PIT is the shortest!

We use them a lot between LHR and CWL - positioning flights for maintenance at BAMC.

As for revenue flights, I think that the shortest it has been used on is flights to Paris CDG on occasion. Probably spent as long taxying as it did in the air!

To answer the (rephrased) question, here are the routes BA normally operates a 747 on (I don't know about seasonal operation, but this is from the summer timetable):
LHR-BKK
LHR-BOS
LHR-EZE
LHR-CPT
LHR-ORD
LHR-DEL
LHR-HKG
LHR-JHB
LHR-LOS
LHR-LAX
LHR-MRU
LHR-MEL
LHR-MEX
LHR-MIA
LHR-BOM
LHR-NBO
LHR-JFK
LHR-PER
LHR-PHX
LHR-GIG
LHR-SFO
LHR-GRU
LHR-SEA
LHR-SIN
LHR-SYD
LHR-NRT
LHR-YYZ
LHR-YVR

Of these, Lagos (LOS) is the shortest at 3101 miles. Boston (BOS) is next at 3265 miles, with JFK and YYZ next.

Geoff M.

[Edit: yes, I know some of these routes are the same, ie LHR-BKK-SYD for example]

At the moment, yes, but it will revert back to the 744 come the peak season (i.e. winter).
