Bmibaby - What Next?

Heard from a reliable source within BD today that WW is soon to "leave" the British Midland group. Whether this is through an agreed take-over of WW, merger with another carrier, insolvency etc has not been made apparent yet. However, the source tells me that major redundancies are on the cards which itself would suggest that WW would not therefore be merged back into BD mainline as they would still require the staff and crew to manage the same number of aircraft as they do now. It's not a case of if, but when, according to my source with staff in certain areas of the company already looking at career moves elsewhere before the inevitable happens. Any thoughts....????

Baby is (I think) the only profitable arm of the group at the moment. BD have spent a fortune changing their structure in line with the baby model. They are incorporating tiny fares on mainline flights and Baby markets all the tiny fares from LHR.

So, no. I highly doubt that WW will leave BMI. Too much has gone on recently to make the two more similar.

I flew WW on MAN-ORK-MAN two weeks ago. I was, overall, pleased: it was comfortable; clean; and ontime. It was not, however, that cheap, but I nevertheless thought it was fine, although it seriously needs to work on its self-check-in machine, which was the downside. Its puntuality was best. Its pre-boarding seat allocation was OK, but I'm not bothered if it's an option or not: I always get to the airport before check-in opens. If people are to buy onboard refreshments, it does, of course, need to actually have them onboard, and not resort to saying - on both legs - that there is none.

I believe so too, but as such a sell-off would provide much needed funds for MB's bmi, which at the end of the day is "his" little baby. It has always been the intention of the British Midland group that WW would one day operate as a separate division within the group with it's own board, management and AOC. This however seems to have become a little clouded of late. If U2/FR for example want it, why not let them have it, make a truck-load of cash and try to turn bmi back into what it was, a "serious alternative" (as they once branded themselves) to BA on domestics and short-haul European. Focus on what they were once good at, and could be again.....
