Finally, A Real Runway For ABI!?

Fri Aug 19, 2005 4:30 pm

For the few of you who may be interested, the City of Abilene is proposing extending RWY 17L/35R at ABI from the current length of 7200' to its "ultimate length" of 9000'. This would entail adding an additional 1200' to the south end (and relocating the Glideslope & MALSR equipment), and 600' to the north end (moving the localizer structures).

Concurrent with or prior to this project would be the development of a dedicated air cargo ramp adjacent to the northern runway extension, direct access to American Eagle's maintenance facility, and relocation of Highway 36. The actual runway extension is scheduled to begin in 2009.

Since these and other airport improvements are subject to a local bond election, the city is making the case for the longer runway by stating the need for a local alternative to DYS in case of a B-1B bomber emergency, as well as the capability to handle fully-loaded mainline jets.

Other proposed improvements include a new ATC tower, yet another phase of terminal renovations (expansion of ticket lobbies, new entrances/exits, installation of a canopy over the upper-level roadway), new pavement for the airline apron area, and, believe it or not, a consolidated rental car facility.

This is a pretty impressive "wish list" for an airport that will enplane around 80,000 passengers this year (probably a record, but still less than 1/4 of the total population of Abilene's media market).
