Info On EK From AKL And DJ (virgin Blue) Please

Fri Aug 19, 2005 6:21 pm

In October I'm off to Australia, towards the end of October for a holiday. I'm flying from AKL to SYD on EK and then two few days later on DJ to MEL then 7 days later NZ to WLG. What can I expect on EK and DJ? Also what is the loads like on EK from AKL?

I'm also off to Australia in late July, early October. I will try to post trip reports on both trips.

EK Loads across the tasman are fairly light from what i hear but are full to bursting in the cargo hold. AKL SYD is operated by the EK 773 ER. Expect an Awesome aircraft, the ICE IFE and excellent EK service.... Enjoy  cool

Thanks. I choose AKL-SYD cause of the B773ER (hence my username). What percentage are the loads currently?

Cant give you specifics other than pilot mates saying the flights are light... in my experience flying DXB BNE/SYD, most of the pax get off in Oz. Not sure how many tickets are being sold on the Tasman route alone... As i say though, belly is full of cargo. Expect to get a seat to yourself, its a big awesome bird...

If you are flying EK across the tasman around the weekend, then expect solid loads, in fact on some occasions full flights. I have done AKL-SYD once and AKL-MEL twice on EK, all occasions on weekends, and loads have been high.
Flew MEL-AKL on a weekeday once and it was about 60% full.

When I went with them AKL-MEL in March this year, they would have been 75-80% full. Loads vary from day to day.

Who does the check-in for EK? Any idea on how much it would cost to upgrade at check-in?

Menzies Aviation (same company that does Pac. Blue).
The upgrade at check-in will cost more than the current difference between your fare and that of the Business or First class fare for that flight.

Thanks NZ747

Another two question.......How many hours before depature does the EK check-in open? I prefer to check-in as early as possible....early to check-in....more time to explore. How busy is Depatures and depature customs on saturdays in AKL from 3pm onwards? What about SYD arrivals from 5pm?

DJ are a great airline. I fly them alot on MEL-SYD, MEL - ADL and MEL-CBR. I'm 183cms tall and the seat pitch is fine by me. Here's some pointers:

Check in before an hour from departure and you should get a window seat if you want it and also in the 1/3 of the a/c you want. Check really try to accomodate your request. If you ask for the front row 1A-1C you'll directly face the cabin crew on take of and landing. You may want to do this or not, but you won't get a good window. The cabin crew are usually friendly and relaxed, although after a few flights their jokes get boring. The seats in the first 3 rows are narrower than the rest of the a/c because, I suspect, the fueselage starts to curve into the nose. I prefer rows 3-7. Depending on whether it's a 737 or 738 beware of row 9ish as it has the missing window. Take money on board as you'll have to pay for food and drink if you want it, I would suggest you by a Boost (in Sydney terminal) and take it on board with you. Grab a window seat so you can get a good view SYD and MEL. You may also see CBR on your right about 20ish minutes after take off. You'll may also get the long approach into MEL which can take you over the CBD, very cool. Take head phones and you can plug into the inflight audio. That's it really, the flight is about 80minutes long and usually smooth. Oh, one last thing, the female cabin crew take great pride in their appearance. If you're really lucky you may get an all female cabin crew  bigthumbsup

Have a great flight and enjoy OZ, you'll love Melbourne.

Thanks B787

I'm a good height so any window seat will be fine with me (except for non window seats)

EK Check in usually opens once the CX check in closes at around midday. Things may have changed slightly now menzies have SQ as well but would think from 1230-1300. Departures/Customs shouldn't be an issue, nothing much except a few A320s and 763s departing at that time of day - the TG MD11 is the most likely to cause you delays. You'll be through in about 10-20 minutes though I reckon. The Queues aren't nearly the problem they used to be I don't think.

Either way I agree with you - Check in with heaps of time to spare. Loads to BNE aren't that great but it's all first in first serve as far as seats go.

I'm afraid I hven't been onboard that yet as we don't handle EK flights but I have flown EK 773s with the same interior. Just having a look at the seat map I would probably say the last row on the first cabin, or the 3 rows of two near the rear.
