AA 738 Routings-no LAX/ORD

Sat Aug 20, 2005 3:48 am

So I've noticed that AA has placed many 738s on LAX-DFW and removed ALL 738s from LAX to ORD. This kinda sucks, who wants to fly 4 1/2 hours from ORD to LAX on an MD-80? ANyway, what is up w/ this? I had heard originally that AA wanted more 737s out of MIA, if that is the case then why 737s from LAX to DFW...

I don't believe that there are any 738s at the ORD hub any longer.

Probably about the same amount of people that want to fly 4 1/2 hours from ORD to LAX in a 738. The difference is really not that great. Capacities are similar, the main difference is just the cabin width, which is only 1 seat. The 2-3 config can also be looked at as a positive for the 2 side. Yeah, the MD can be noisier in the back, but its pretty nice up front. All in all, they're pretty comparable in my book.

No M80 operates to MIA and no 738 operates to ORD. The M80's are focused to ORD and the 738's to MIA.

As it happens, yes.

Yet another reason why I usually always find myself on the one of the 767-300s that AA flies between LAX and ORD.

I wish they would have done that last year... I've never been on a 757, and I flew MSN-ORD-MIA-EYW-MIA-ORD-MSN in January... would have been nice to have been on one.

The only advantage the 738 had over the M80 on that route is the IFE.

Last I checked AA flew only MD-80s and 763s on the route. The MD-80 is a helluva better place to spend 3.5 hours than a 738 imho!

Me. I much prefer the 2-3 layout to the 3-3. When traveling with a companion, sitting on the left side of an MD-80 almost (almost!) feels like first class.

While the MD-80 doesnt have IFE, it has a ton of powerports, even in coach. This is popular with the business traveler.

Shitty IFE at that. Still don't know why AA went cheap-o on the IFE on the 738 and installed monitors in the central ceilings vs. LCD screens that flip down like Delta...

This is because AA has not any MD-8x aircraft based in MIA (for over water operation certifications) and only basing them in MIA and DFW from big-hub standpoint. AA bases the MD-8x standpoint, these are based in DFW and ORD from the big-hub standpoint. The MD-8x aircraft are perfect for DFW and ORD, they can go to SAN, SEA, BOS, MCO and everywhere in between and Canada.

Routes for ORD use the 757, 767, and 777 for longer, denser, and over water flights.

For a flight from ORD to the West Coast, the 737-800 wins hands down. Bad IFE beats no IFE. Also, the overhead bins on the 737 are taller than on the MD-80. I've seen a lot of people connecting at ORD had a lot of trouble getting bags into the overhead of the MD-80. I've heard them say that there was no trouble getting the bag into the overhead on the prior flight. It usually turned out that the first flight was on a 737 or 757.

No more 738s for us in SFO either. We operate S80 between ORD and DFW. Barring our widebodies between the two cities.
