Chicago Air Show - No Commercial Aircraft - Why?

Sat Aug 20, 2005 6:41 am

Does anyone know why there are no commercial aircraft doing a fly-by at the Chicago Air & Water Show this weekend? With Boeing being headquartered in Chicago, you would think it would be a great opportunity, they already are a sponsor. I would love to see a 747 or 777 do a low fast buzz over the beach. The closest thing we get to a commercial aircraft is the KC-10. Even the military versions of the 737 or 767 would be awesome. With the 777-200LR just finishing its world tour it could have flown to Chicago and back from Seattle in without even stopping. It is, after all, the oldest and largest free air show in the US.

I assume some of the Boeing employees that contribute on A-net could make my dreams come true.

There was a Midway Airlines MD-80 fly-by back in the 80s. If I recall correctly, it was piloted by an airline executive.

I thought they usually had an AA 772 fly-by...well they did the years I was there anyway.

I sure do miss that air show. Remember I went when I was around 12 or 13 or so...got on the beach, sat down, and watched as a B-2, B-52, B-1B, F-16, and a multitude of other craft flew over me, over Lake Shore Drive, and around. They even did a sea rescue demo with one of the helicopter squads. It was an awesome experience.

Probably because there is no static display of aircraft anywhere. Commercial aircraft fly by the Chicago lakefront 24/7 so a low level commercial fly-by wouldn't necessarily create a lot of excitement. Nevertheless, you'd think Boeing Commercial would have found an interesting way to exploit this venue by now.

No, AA nor any other airline has ever had a 777 fly-by at the Chicago Air & Water Show. Last year or the year before, however, at about 9 am on the Saturday of the show, American Eagle had an ERJ perform a fly-by at about 300' AWL (above water level!) I also agree that it would be great if Boeing had their 777LR show up! But historically the Chicago show has been a military-themed show with a few aerobatic performers mixed in.

Rumor has it that this year we might see an F-22. Can anyone confirm this? (Or am I confusing the F-22 with the UA 757 w/ winglets?)

If anyone who lives in Chicago and hasn't seen the show, its a great time! Worth the hassle getting down there. But just be prepared to deal with 1 million other people who feel the same way.

I think United should show off one of their 747s or 777s in the new livery and do a close fly by. They are "Chicago's hometown airline" afterall.  Smile

A low flying commercial aircraft could be a security threat--it could have been hijacked by a terrorist! Mayor Daley, we love ya!

The Ft. Lauderdale, FL (McDonalds Air and Sea Show) this past May had several low and slow, dirty and clean (alternately) passes by an AA 777. And last year or the year before they had MD-80 and 757 or 767 (can't recall) do fly by's in a very, very loose formation.

But cool nonetheless, and the passes are low.

I remember going to the Chicago Air and Sea Show back in 2002 and watching it from the Navy Pier on the Sunday Show. It was about an hour before the official airshow started and they were just doing the wave runner stuff I think, I went on one of the Boat tours- the Big Dog, Mad dog or whatever that big yellow speedboat is that takes you out on the lake. In the distance I could see an ERJ doing passes back and forth a few times, it must have been the Eagle ERJ. Again, this was about an hour before any aviation acts started though.

Chicago has an airshow with 747's and A330's everday - over at KORD that is! Perhaps with Boeing having their new HQ there they might want to make this show a little more than what it is today, but right now I just don't think the show is marketed like that of Farnborough or Paris.

Is there any use to bring a scanner to the show? Or are they mostly military freqs (which my bearcat doesn't get)?

Was at the practice day on Friday, my friend has a boat on lake Michigan
so the planes go right over your head.

Loudest plane was the B1 but the F15 pilot really tore it up . The Thunderbirds were doing the high show and was pretty good until 1 F16
left the area, leaving a 3 plane diamond. I don't know if it was just because
it was a practice day but the Thunderbirds display seemed to end early.

Got some pictures of the B2 and the F14 from last years show, but I am a newbie so I now have to figure out how to get into the net.

Up at MKE we have a B-52 parked at the 128th Air Refueling Wing area. Maybe it is parked there for the Chi air show.

Just got back from today's show. Pretty good stuff. They had 2 FA-22's, and I think they said they were there just today, not tomorrow. The B-1B was great, as usual. The F-15 and F-18's were cool. KC-10 & KC-135.

The B-52 was indeed staying up a MKE for the Chicago Air Show. Very cool display.

All in all a great show. The Thunderbirds were great as usual. For the most part it was a 'low show." The cloud deck was at about 2500' until 2pm.

The best part was the United 757 new colors with winglets...  Wink

I maybe a bit biased but I much prefer the Blue Angels over the Thunderchickens. The F/A18 is overall the better airplane and the Blues have a much better routine and show. I am glad we got the Blues and Fat Albert in MKE for our airshow last month.

You ain't seen nothing until you saw the European teams or the Russians. Red Arrows, Russian Knights and Frecce Tricolori own both of them.
