Airlines Who Own Their Fleet

Sat Aug 20, 2005 8:58 am

As stated above...Do any airline actually own their fleet ouright and arent leasing planes from anyone? Big or Small operators.
Looks like the fresh wind has gone stale

Prior to NWA going private in the late 1980's they owned their fleet - Thanks to our own Checci and Wilson they leveraged that!

I think Southwest does.

I believe WestJet does as well. Makes it easy if they've got a cash crunch. Sell off a plane or two and walk away with a hefty wad of cash,

Iberia owned all their fleet before being privatized.

Currently I think they own less than 50% of it.

WN owns virtually all of their fleet. I think only a few of their aircraft are leased or aquired through creditors.

Does B6 own their fleet? I know they leased a few planes but I thought I saw something about them owning the majority of them.

Most, but not all. Their plans were and are for at least 10 of the 737-700 acquisitions to be leases in 2004-6. All of their 737-800's are/will be leases. Their last (2nd) quarter report states leased aircraft as:

13 x 737-700
5 x 737-800
5 x 737-200

That was out of a total of 60 aircraft at quarter end. The 200's were already arranged to be gone at quarter end but the agreements hadn't been finalized, so they still show up above.

As far as the big guns go, what about SQ? Their ownership must be pretty high...

There is no way that Jetbrutal own their fleet. First of all they are in the very early stages of their leases and enjoying the slightly easier payment schedules, but they in no way own their fleet... not even close.

Just look at their profits, and then look at the cost of the A320 and how fast they add them and there is your answer.

Does BA own the majority of their own fleet? I recall reading somewhere that apart from a handful of leased aircraft, they own the rest of the fleet.

Apologies. According to the BA accounts to 31 March 2005, the "owned" fleet has a book cost of £286m, finance leased fleet £141m and HP aircraft £168m.

What about LH? And Emirates? I reckon they own everything
There is one problem with airbus. Though their products are engineering marvels they lack passion, completely.

From their 2004 annual report, WN leases 84 737-300's, 9 737-500's, and 2 737-700's, and the rest of their fleet is owned, and owned the other 322 aircraft.

From their 2004 annual report, B6 leased 25 of their 69 planes, owning the other 44.

LH only has a few aircraft on finance lease. those are two A321s, 16 CRJs (could include EW, not sure) and 5 ATRs (at its regional subsidiaries). the information i took from the current annual report. it also seems that the last two 742s were on Finance lease as well.

Airlines "own" very few of their newer aircraft if you mean 100% cash paid to the manufacturer without financing from the banking industry. They are almost all financed. Just like most new cars!

You can add Jet2 to the list. All their aircraft are owned by their parent company Dart Group.

VASP used to own their 732's and all the A300's. You can check that since they stopped operations, their planes are stopped in some airports of Brazil:
