Which Made More Money 737 Or 747?

Sun Aug 21, 2005 6:49 pm

Since these two airplanes have been around for about the same time, I was wondering which made more money to Boeing? What's your guess?

While i have no data to back this up I would say the 737 since there are more 73's than 74's. Of course the one could argue the 74's since their cost per probally dwarfs the 73's price.

I think that the 747 was Boeings milkcow for 2-3 decades simply because nobody offered anything close to a viable alternative, so they could pretty much set the price as they wanted.

747. In fact, the 747-400 has probably made more money than any other single commerical aircraft product in history.

The program has sold over 1,000 examples (650+ under the 744) with no competitor and at very high yield per order. The 744 is still selling well today, with 21 gross orders in 2005 and Boeing continutes to profit from conversion programs of older models.

Some bus cheerleader is bound to comment on the A320 in retort of that.

You are probibly right, GARPD. Maybe the Airbus cheerleaders can point out the fact that every airplane developed by Airbus, including the A-320 series, has cost them (Airbus) vertually nothing in development costs?  bigthumbsup

Therefore, the profit margines on all "Busses" is considerly higher than any "Boeing Iron".  box

the 747 probably made more money for boeing not just in selling costs but in overall marketing and brand name effects...for years, the most famous aircraft in the world has been the Boeing 747...the 707 put Boeing on the map, the 747 put Boeing in every household in America (name recognition wise), and people wanted to fly on 747's...

The 747 was a great cash cow for Boeing, only now with the A346 and 773 below and A380 above are there real rivals. I'm sure the profit margin on the recent 747F sales was a fraction of what they got for the early 744s.

The 737 has always faced stiff competition, from the DC9/MD80 and then the A320.

>> I'm sure the profit margin on the recent 747F sales was a fraction of what they got for the early 744s.

The program is also fully amortized so a 744 sale (or 767, A300, etc for that matter) is free of a significant fraction of the unit cost of a newer type like the 777, 787, A330/A340, A350, etc. Depending on who you listen to, amortization of development cost is more than 1/8 the unit cost per sale.

Eliminate that, and it's possible to make a decent profit on a 747 sale, even in 2005. Boeing definitly isn't selling the aircraft "at cost."

True, but if Airbus hadn't launched the A380, the list price would be a lot higher, as airlines had no choice!
