Transfer From LHR To STN?

Mon Aug 22, 2005 7:35 pm

I am traveling Non Rev from LAX to LHR on their speed bird fare which is a positve space non rev ticket. My final destination is ROME and the cheapest full fare ticket I could find is Ryan Air out of STN. How difficult or easy is it to transfer between airports and about how long would it take ? Any help is appreciated. Mahalo !!!

Not difficult at all. There is a Bus station at the heart of LHR with a regular bus connection to Stansted.

I know this as I used the Bus to get from STN to LHR. It runs ever 30 mins I believe and takes a little over an hour to get to STN from LHR.
Reasonable fare to.

Taken from www.baa.co.uk :

Heathrow – Stansted
National Express run two to three coaches every hour between Heathrow and Stansted, with a journey time of approxiamately 90 minutes. Services are less frequent in the evenings, early mornings and throughout the night. Return fares start from £26.

"Journey Time" of course is subject to the conditions on the M25 (London Orbital Motorway) !

For rail-services you would have to take the expensive Heathrow Express to Paddington, connect onto the Tube (Subway) for Liverpool Street and connect there onto Stansted Express ... (I would NOT recommend that).

For ease of travel: Try to get a flight out of LHR. Or try to fly out of LTN (links from LHR to LTN are not available on BAA´s website as they don´t ru(i)n LTN  biggrin  ).

Heathrow – Stansted
Stansted Express trains depart every 15 or 30 minutes with an average journey time of 45 minutes. They run between London Liverpool Street station and Stansted Airport. The Heathrow Express departs from Paddington and the airport stations (Terminals 1, 2 and 3 and Terminal 4) every 15 minutes, with a journey time of 15 minutes. Heathrow Connect services operate between the same stations, but run half hourly and are a slower, stopping service. Passengers can also travel to and from Heathrow Airport and the centre of London on the Piccadilly line tube. Passengers can travel between Paddington and Liverpool Street stations by bus, tube or taxi.

As you list yourself as flight attendant, you should be able to obtain interline tickets. As I assume you are travelling BA LAXLHR, you will be able to connect in Terminal 1 which is where the FCO flights also depart.

If you don't have access to interline, why not try BA.com to get their best fares which are occasionally cheaper than the cheapies!

The prices on BA are astronomical !! Almost 2x what Ryanair is charging. I am actually looking for fares for a good friend who is going on her honeymoon. She is a flight attendant like I am but wants to fly full fare once in Europe.

Why does she want to fly 'full fare' in Europe? Is she trying to avoid issues with non-rev travel? I would tell her NOT to chance it with Ryanair on her honeymoon. It's just not worth the hassle and she'd likely be better off non-reving.

If you miss the flight, you're done for and must buy a new ticket (at a much higher fare). Also, they aren't known to handle cancellations and other irregular ops well at all. Ryanair don't fly to FCO, they fly to CIA which may be more convenient. I'm not sure as I've never used Ciampino. It is, at least, not 2h away as some of RyanAir's airports can be.

Also, when is she looking? If you're 300 days out you will see fares drop as you get closer in. Finally, remember that Alitalia flies LHR-FCO, their fares may be lower although they aren't exactly reliable either.

Her honeymoon starts on the 28th of Sept. She is flying positive space LAX-LHR on BA on what is called a speed bird fare($290 RT). She will have approximately 4 hrs to connect so i dont think she and her new hubby will have a problem (although she isnt the brightest crayon in the box, but I love her to death).

I flew STN-CIA on a Monday morning earlier this year. The flight ran about a half hour late, which wasn't a problem since I wasn't connecting.

Ciampino Airport is nearer to Rome than Fiumicino, but Fiumicino has a commuter rail terminus at the terminal while Ciampino passengers rely on taxis and buses to town, to commuter rail and to the metro. I waited an hour (hit a hole in the schedule) for a COTRAL bus that took a charmingly circuitous half-hour route to the metro, but that's part of how I like to travel. Web sites say cabs are estimated to be €40 to the city center, while the bus was €1 and the metro fare was €1. Intermediate in price is the Terravision bus from Ciampino to the main Rome rail station, €8/each, 40 minutes to town -- you must buy a ticket online or inside the terminal, the driver doesn't sell tickets.

"4 hours to connect" to what ?
Is that 4 hours from arrival at LHR to departure at STN ?

BTW: On 29-SEP (?!) and return beginning of October I find fares on AZ LHR-FCO starting as low as 150 € ( = 100 GBP). When taking the fares of FR and the fare of the transfer coach into account PLUS all the hassle of transferring on both the inbound and the outbound flight into account, I definitely would try to fly out of LHR !
