Top 10 Largest Airports

Tue Aug 23, 2005 4:09 am

Does anyone have an idea what the largest airports are ?
This year I flew into DEN and ICN, and both looked enormous.
Looking at a map, I estimate DEN about 100 square kms (40 square miles)
ICN, also very recently built, must be in the same range.

thanks,

Luc

I assume you mean: largest in terms of square miles owned by the airport authority?
My happy place is FL470 - what's yours?

Or do you mean in terms of passengers per year?

RUH is the world's largest airport in terms of square miles.

I thought it was something like Riyadh, DEN, DFW, MCO, IAH--of course this is all out of my arse though.

DFW is large enough to have both its own post office, and its own zip code. It is the largest airport in Texas, the second largest in the United States, and third largest in the world.

To have the own post office and ZIP code the airport needs not to be as large as IAH. Even Zurich (ZRH) which is much smaller does have the own post office and ZIP code (8058 Zürich-Flughafen).

I just found this on the website of RUH

Characteristics of some International Airports

KFIA, Eastern Region
760 sq km

KKIA, Riyadh
220 sq km

KAIA, Jeddah
105 sq km

Mirabel, Montreal
356 sq km

Dallas / Fort Worth
71 sq km

Charles De Gaulle, Paris
31 sq km

Dorval, Montreal*
14.16 sq km

J.F. Kennedy / New York
20 sq km

Frankfurt
12 sq km

Heathrow London*
11.4 sq km

San Francisco*
21 sq km

Copenhagen*
11 sq km

Schipol, Amsterdam*
8 sq km

I don't know how reliable this info is, and it's certainly not a top 10.
This list was made apparently to highlight the size of the saudi airports.

Believe it.

Have you been to DFW, FRAspotter?

DFW Airport is larger, in land area, than the island of Manhattan in New York City.

It shouldn't be. They have 7 runways, and they are spaced way apart.

How is that hard to believe. It is almost 30 square miles, it has 7 runways and non of them intersect. We can use all 7 of our runways in North flow at one time. In south flow requires a little separation for 13L and 17L.

As I recall, DEN, DFW, and MCO are the three biggest in the US.

Not uncommon. We have our own PO and zip code here at MSY.
