Qantas Order Questions?

Fri May 05, 2000 11:51 am

I was wondering if we had anyone close to the action or with new info regarding their long-haul widebody order?

Quantas and KLM reps. were touring completed 777s at the Boeing Everett delivery center on Tuesday. Of course that may or may not indicate something.

I would say that is a good indication of what is going to happen, especially considering that QF are now an all-Boeing airline.

BTW...QF's name is QANTAS, not Quantas. It is not a word as such, but is derived from Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services.

I´m not so sure about this being an indicator for an order. Airlines regulary visit the production lines and it isn´t a secret that both KLM and Qantas are looking on the 777 and 340. They will or have paid both manufactures such a visit which usually includes the close visit of the aircrafts being considered. My thoughts.

I agree with Flying-Tiger. Airline reps often make trips to the manufacturers to inspect the production lines and aircraft. Sometimes this happens without the airline actually looking to buy aircraft at all. I can remember a highly publicized trip by Aeroflot reps to the 747 line. Of course, nothing came of it. Recently a magazine (I forget which) reported that MAS had decided on the A345. Turns out they had only found out that their reps were looking at the cabin mockup. So far, no decision had been made.
That said, I have it on pretty good authority that Qantas is one of the 6 airlines Boeing reportedly has signed on for the 777LR!

As stated above VIPs going through aircraft at factories isn't that important of a factor. But as also stated above I think that QF will order the 777-200LR over the A340-500.

Whilst the 777 is the favorite to win the order, the fact that QF reps were at Boeing last week means nothing. The CEO of QF and his deputy spent the entire previous week with Airbus in France.

I have read that Qantas was looking at both. In fact i read that their reps went to the Airbus factory before going to Boeing. I have been involved on a discussion on this topic in another forum. I expressed the view that Qantas were long time customers of Boeing and I felt that they would not change particularly in view of the fact that they were part of the original working group on the 777. However i may have to modify my views. It may be that Boeing cannot provide the suitable Aircraft that Qantas requires for its routes. In that case that Justifies a change.
