Strategies To Combat Rising Fuel/Operating Cost

As we all know the sky touching fuel costs and increasing Security surcharges that airlines levy from passengers, i would like to now how airlines can/are fighting against such un-controllable costs?

CNN reported on TV about DL doing stuff like asking passengers to put the window blinds down after taxing into gates, so that the plane remains cool and on departure, lesser thrust is used(am not sure if it helps), basic paint work on aircrafts to reduce weight, no owens on board, only cold cuts/snacks be served on board and a few other measures which i dont remember.

I would like to know if any of you (airliners or readers like me) who know anything of airlines taking types of measures to tackle rising costs?

What about having pax park the aircraft themselves upon arrival? Nothing better than a good stretch after a red-eye

More seriously:

- some airlines have grounded their less fuel-effective aircrafts;

- there was a thread some weeks ago about instructions given to AA (?) pilots on how to reduce fuel burn;

- some airlines are requesting extra-surcharges to cover for fuel prices increase (they ask you to pay at the check-in, in addition to your fare);

- some airlines are providing less heating in the cabin, especially at night;

Etc.

Well, the airlines already have pretty sophisticated models that compare regional differences in fuel prices and tell them when it's efficient to tanker fuel from one place to another and when it's not a good idea. So that's pretty much done. Paint is a fairly substantial component of weight....I do not have the figures in front of me here but I think that a paint job on an L1329 Jetstar accounted for about 80 pounds.

The only area that I can see that improvements can be made other than improvements in engine technology is exploitation of more efficient flight regimes taking into account trim settings, weight distribution, and power settings-although I suspect that this is pretty well worked out as well.

Hey

unfortunately flying is getting more like bustraveling more and more... It is loosing its' glory because of airlines such as Ryanair and company!

It is bad, but what can you do about it when everybody is struggling to cut costs!

One trick the airlines know of is to reduce seat pitch and add another row to the back of the plane  Wink
