WN Red Eyes?

Tue Aug 23, 2005 11:27 pm

Just curious as to why Southwest does not have any true red eye flights. Almost all their eastbound flights get to their destinations by midnight or about 1:00. But, there are no midnight departures from West Coast cities that get to East Coast ones at 5 and 6 in the morning. Almost every other carrier has late night eastbounds.

A night flight of long length whereby everyone getting off in the morning has red eyes. Classic eastbound trans-Atlantics, for example.

Red-Eyes are lengthy flights that take off late and arrive the next morning; or movies that star ole buddy from Batman Begins.

Southwest doesn't have red-eyes because they carry out maintenence at night. Its been discussed at length before; for more info try a search.

In your definition, you say lengthy flights. Can't see why. I have taken damn short red-eye flights, like SFO to ORD or PHL (about 3 hours, leaving around midnight, landing around 5AM local time).

And the shortest the flight, the more red the eyes are.

PHL-SEA

PHL-SEA wouldnt be considered a red-eye...just a long flight

SEA-PHL would be a red eye if you took off from SEA at around 11pm pacific and arrived in PHL around 7am eastern, while not an 8 hr flight, technically you are flying over night with less time and less sleep (if any)...thus you would then have "red eyes".

This term doesnt apply to any day time flight, only overnighting flights

I know the topic has been discussed to death, but with sources of revenue becoming more and more elusive, I really believe that it's only a matter of time before we see Southwest red-eyes. With the increase in trans-cons that airline is flying, it may not be on a large scale, but I do think it's inevitable.

I too am surprised that WN has not introduced a red-eye flight. Jet Blue has a red-eye from DEN-BOS...i Believe this is still running.

Somehow my redeye post got deleted, anyway, to continue this conversation, other than the transcon red eyes, could i have a list of other redeyes that are scheduled? I know of a Co express DEN-IAH.

I realize other people have already answered you, but I thought I'd make one more addition; most redeyes take advantage of time zones, to make the flight "longer." There is a "redeye" that leaves DEN at like 2:30, and gets into IAH at 5. Most redeyes fly from West to East, because it allows them to skip over time zones, as opposed to flying back into the same time. The same reason that a flight leaving LAX at midnight and gets into JFK at about 6, even though its only a 3.5 hour flight.

You guys that are flying from the West Coast to NYC/PHL in 3 to 3 1/2hours are rather lucky. What are you flying on? Concorde or CV-990?

They have thrown about the idea of flying a few from LAS, given the extreme success of HP on those routes, but have stayed the course of no redeyes up till now

B6 actually has a habit of starting in a market with a redeye as a test and then doing daytime flights later. It allows them to get maximum utilization as they can fly on the east coast during the day, then to the west, the back east over night

The reason is because that is when WN does all of their maitenence along with the deep cleaning of each plane. Instead of pulling it out of service which is a domino effect, they'll do the mx late at night so that it's ready in the morning.
My posts/replies are strictly my opinion and not that of any company, organization, or Southwest Airlines.

Actually I have noticed that a lot of the non-stop West to East coast Southwest flights takeoff early or late morning. There was also discussion of having redeye flights only out of Las Vegas, I don't know if Southwest is still trying to do that.

Try 5 hours.

I'll be taking the SAN-JFK red-eye on JetBlue, should be an interesting experience. Leaves at 9:35, arrives at 5:50 or some such!
