How Are Skywest EMB-120s?

Basically my question regards my upcoming flight from Sea-Yvr. How is the service (I'm assuming none, maybe a drink). Is the ride bumpy? Are the seats bearable?...etc

The Skywest props aren't that bad actually. It will depend on weather a lot, but it shouldn't be too bad, especially if you fly in the morning as far as turbulence goes. The EMB-120 is pretty smooth and comfortable. The seats are small just like most props and regional jets. You will probably get a quick drink on the flight, and maybe a snack from the basket. I haven't flown this route though on Skywest as Air Canada Jazz usually operates it.

The worst thing about the EMB-120 is the noise. They are very loud and it is a high pitch vibration. But fortunately you will have a short flight, so it won't be too bad. They are bearable for flights under an hour, but more than that and you really will want the smoothness and quietness of a jet.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

You'll have a drink service, and maybe a small snack. Ride will feel a little bumpier than a jet, but not that bad unless you hit some rough air. It is fairly loud inside, though. Seats are fairly comfy, at least for a short flight. Avoid row 11 - on the "forward galley" version, row 11 is a row of four seats across the back of the plane, and on the "rear galley" version, you're sitting directly across from the lavatory.

Thanks, I was pretty worried about the noise/turbulence (good to know about morning flights as I am taking one (8:10AM to be precise), I'm flying the ACJazz flight back and I've been on a DH8 with horizon before but cant remember the noise level of it.

I've taken OO's EMB120's SFO-ACV a bunch of times and had a great time! Clean, well kept aircraft, pleasant service, wonderful takeoff over the Pacific Ocean. Props, since they ride lower and are smaller are naturally more prone to getting bounced around, but nothing a vodka won't fix  Wink One of the nice things about riding lower is the wonderful scenery you get to see, which may not happen in a jet.

Seats are just fine. If you've ever taken an ERJ anywhere, it's the exact same layout inside. Ask for an "A" seat, which is the combination aisle/window on the captain's side of the aircraft (1-2 layout).

HAHAHHA, love the vodka comment, I got an A seat, as I have been on an erj 135 before with American Eagle, and thought it was one of the coolest seats I have ever been on while flying!

What is even better than a "A" seat is a seat in the emergency exit row, which has tons of leg room. I have flown many flights on the OO Brasilias, mostly on LAX-OXR (no drink service as you are in the air all of 12 minutes). They can get bumpy on shorter flights as they don't get much above 5000 feet, but the higher you go, the smoother the ride is. Also, the noise is really not all that bad and they have quite good climate control as turboprops go

The best seat in the house (other than the two up front) is 9C.

1) It is an exit row with tons of leg room.
2) It is further aft, with a view not obstructed by a nacelle or wing
3) It is further aft >> quieter!

Hi!

I flew with Skywest from FAT to LAX in August 1998. It was a short but nice flight, I was by the wing and engine so those props really "sing" heavy over your ears. But besides that the plane is cool. The configuration in 1-2 so if you are alone try to get the single seat row, but if u have company you can also go in the single row and keep talking with someone behind or ahead of you. I remember that I had my 2 kids behind and ahead of me and we all were talking!

For an hour or less..ok..for more than that..brutal. But don't get me wrong, I'm happy to have air service to some of the places I want to fly. I realize that it is not economical to fly a larger jet to some of these places, and I am happy to have air service. Flying a smaller plane to smaller cities is just part of the territory.

I fly MSP-EWR occasionally on CO's ERJ145. Give me a couple vodkas and an A seat and I could fly all day on the ERJ. Or my own C-D seats would be nice. Oh and a fully-charged laptop battery helps as well, and a recently downloaded movie.

HAHAHA I think under those conditions I could fly longhaul on any plane, well maybe not the UK charters with 28" seat pitch, but the idea is the same...

AHHH YES! First class on the Brazilia. 9B and 9C. If noone is next to you there is a button on the base that you can lift the arm rest. Even the one by the aisle. I frequently fly between LAX and IYK and usually have enough room to relax cross my legs in front of me and read the Times (with out having to fold the paper!!)

SkyWest EMB-120s are a lot of fun - almost like barnstorming! If you get good weather (unlikely from SEA-YVR, I know!) your view should be spectaculr. Definitely get a seat in row 9, though. Tons of leg room.
Keeping the "civil" in civil aviation...

I've taken that flight, and numerous others on the EMB-120s. They're actually very enjoyable.

Just bring a pair of earplugs, have a cocktail, and relax and enjoy the flight.
A good landing is one you can walk away from. A great landing is if the aircraft can be flown again.

But how do they compared to Dash 8's? We used to have the Sky West Embraer's in Victoria (YYJ) from SEA until they pulled the route as a result of 9/11. I wish they would bring it back so I could get the opportunity to fly on one. I've only been on the Embraer 110.

my buddy is on his IOE for the 120's right now and just got out of ground school. One other skywest pilot i talked to described it as the vomit comet, and said they used to make bets about how many pax would throw up on each flight.

but im sure you'll be fine  Wink

suddenly, I dont want to go on my vacation anymore!.. just kidding (sort of) but I'm sure I'll be fine (hoping). But one thing im wondering is how does it compare to a DHC-8? because I have been on one and am going on an ACJazz example on the return. Is the noise really that bad, or is it "somewhat obnoxious"?

It is not THAT bad. It is definitely loud and annoying, but it won't hurt your hearing at all.

It really depends on what type of Dash 8 you are talking about. It is similar to the older ones. However the plane is smaller and only 3 abreat. The new Q400s and the like have noise cancelling technology and are a lot better. I would say that the noise and vibrations are no worse than an older Dash 8 or Saab 340. It is pretty standard in the 80s 30 seat prop genre. Don't be worried, it will be fine. Plus you will be flying in the morning, so it probably will be pretty smooth out there. You don't fly over any mountain ranges or any areas with thunderstorms between SEA and YVR, so air will be good and the flight won't be bad at all. Don't let people scare you!

I have twice, but don't worry, B6sea, both were extraordinary circumstances:

* a very bumpy flight (and I mean VERY) from FAT to LAS...very hot day (118 degrees in Vegas when we landed) so we had the hot air rising off the desert

* lady who threw up on a SFO-ACV flight from the smell of the nail polish from the obnoxious woman behind her

Kid you not, the FA had asked the twit to stop painting her nails four times, and she kept on doing it. If I'd been the FA I would have had her arrested on landing for failure to obey a crew command...yeah, it probably wouldn't have stuck, but it would have thrown a scare into her.

Seen? No. Smelled? Yes.

I was flying MFR-SFO in November and it was stormy, and the baby in the row in front of me didn't do so well.

I prefer the Brasilia to the CRJ actually. Bigger windows that aren't mounted too low, and 1x2 is nice when flying alone. The back is better for less noise and vibration.

Overall it's pretty similar to the Dash 8, which last flew in July with Piedmont. It's longer than the Dash 8, but narrower (the Dash 8 is 2x2), and as a result only has overhead bins on the 2 side so overhead space is at a premium.

are there toilets on those planes? I make it a point to fly on planes that have toilets. I flew on ATA connection/chicago express from MDW to LAN once on the J-31 props that had no toilet...i made the mistake of drinking two cans of coke before getting on and let's just say...i was the first on off the plane when we landed...45 minutes in a plane and no toilet does not work  Big grin
The next generation of aircraft is just around the corner!

Yes, the plane does have a lavatory. I hear that it's cramped inside, but I've never used the lav, so I couldn't say.
Two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun.

Here is a situation when not to fly in an EMP-120...This is an excerpt from a trip report I worte a while back...


We headed downstairs to the Skywest Area and I checked out the equipment for our flight. I saw that our plane was there already and after coming of the L-1011 it looked SMALL. I was particularly jealous to see that in the next gate was this beautiful brand new CRJ going to California. This was my first look at a CRJ and I couldn’t get over how neat it was. The boarding announcement was made and we headed out to board. It was windy..very windy (gulp). Soon we taxied out and began our takeoff roll. I could feel the plane fighting the cross wind even before we left the ground. Once airborne we felt the full force of the wind and I could feel the pilots working the rudder hard. I was actually interesting to visually look back and see how we were corkscrewing on the air. After 10 minutes the roller coaster abated and we proceeded to climb up to 19,000. Finally able to relax I took a look around the A/C and was actually fairly impressed. I had never flown on a commuter plane and I expected it to be more basic, but I noticed that we had a galley, lav, even a F/A. I was enjoying the view of the Bonneville salt flats when I noticed that the weather was beginning to take an ominous turn. The sun was setting but I could not help notice a solid bank of clouds in our flight path. Soon the pilot announced our initial descent and said he expected some chop but our arrival would be on time. There's that understatement again.

Not 20 seconds into our descent we entered the clouds and the fun really began...The next 20 minutes were pure terror (for me at least). We were doing sudden drops every 10 to 20 seconds accompanied by good 10 to 15 degree rolls at the same time. At every drop you hear the collective gasps coming from the other pax and my girlfriend especially. After one particularly strong bump about 6 bins emptied their cargo on to our unsuspecting heads...even with the Dramamine I was getting a little queasy. My GF started muttering about our impending doom and even I was becoming distressed. I looked at the F/A hopefully and I noticed that she was thoughtfully engrossed in a novel. Well I was actually mad at first thinking she may be in denial about our imminent deaths but I soon realized that what we were experiencing is fairly common for this flight.

Finally we got low enough to see breaks in the clouds and I noticed that we were in a significant snowstorm. We did a wicked 180 turn and landed hard in the snow in Elko. Needless to say when I found out that the runway we landed on (5 I think) didn't even have ILS capability, I became even more impressed with our pilots.


I still get shivers...

Elko is a fun airport to dispatch to in the winter, with the constant threat of fogging in or snowing over. :P

While not an ILS, Elko does have an LDA which provides us our best minimums for that airport with 600-1 for the Brasilia.

Having been on OO Brasilia's many times SEA-BLI RNO-EKO-SLC, I have never had a bad experience, even one morning taking out of RNO when the wind was blowing fierce, was a little bumpy on take off, but great flight. Working in RNO, an airport notorious for wicked cross winds, It amazed me one day when a few larger aircraft diverted to SMF, and here came our little Brasilia and plopped it's little but down and came pulling happily up to the gate. They are a sturdy Plane, and OO always does drink/snack service. I have to agree though, being 6'4" tall, that 9 B or 9 C is definitely the way to go. Also another hint, it's really only noisy if you get in front of row 6, behind the wing is actually pretty quiet. I have a SkyWest Brasilia Model that sits on my desk along with an RJ here at home, they are a cute little bugger !!  Smile
Some days it's just not worth chewing through the restraints...

It's because they fly them to all the southern California destinations in the desert. IYK sits in the middle of death valley. Several OO flight attendants have told me that everyone hates that flight because the heat currents off the desert after the sun goes down makes the turbulence soo bad that one flight attendant even knocked a tooth out. 90% of the time if there is service on that flight at all its just a flight attendant quickly running after take off (and some times before) passing out bottles of water. Some times they would actually serve but more times then not they would strap in and you could actually see the fear in their eyes. It dosen't even bother me. I have seen people puke on the flight. Usually I just fold the paper over if the turbulence gets bad so I can hold it with one hand and use my other to place on the overhead bin to steady my self so I can see the paper.

Its not a flight for the faint of heart.

I love it!

OK well I made the flight yesterday, YVR-SEA. And, it was not a bad flight. IM just saying this because it's easier than writing a trip report. It was a great flight. Yes there was a toilet. It was as smooth as can be. I got an A seat(8A) and it was great being all alone. The stewardess hadnt finished giving drinks by the time we started our descent.

Ill make a trip report with pics and stuff later but... im in my hotel right now and havent uploaded the pictures

Overall: B plus flight
