August Accidents/incidents

Wed Aug 24, 2005 2:01 pm

As news of yet another plane crash reaches us, like many others, I'm beginning to wonder what else could possibly happend before the end of the month. I've read so many threads about the unusually high number of incidents occuring as well. I'm trying to compile a timeline for August, to do with aviation accidents/incidents.

Aug 2 - Air France A340 slides of runway in Toronto and bursts into flames.
Aug 6 - Tuninter ATR72 crashes off coast of Italy.
Aug 14 - Helios 737-300 crashes near Athens, Greece.
Aug 16 - West Caribbean Airways MD-82 crashes in Venezuela
Aug 23 - 737 crashes in Peru.

I don't have dates for the following:
-Puma helicopter crash in Afghanistan
-Copterline crash in the Baltic sea
-CF18 crashes near Quebec City
-ERJ overun in Hanover
-Jazz DH8 lands with smoke in the cockpit
-NW 757 blows 4 tires on landing
-Do228 emergency in Venezuela

I know there are many other incidents as well. I am aware that there are emergency landings and such that occur everyday, but this month seems to be far worse than other months. Can anyone help with the dates of some of these and maybe get a dateline going for the month.

Not at all, IMHO - the airline industry historically has long periods of quiet followed by a rash of accidents/incidents.

Has there ever been a month with more fatal accidents?

What about the NW 747 nosegear collapse in Guam?

Although it is tragic fore the victims and relatives such crashes are, in my opinion, not basically related to aviation but more to the war there. You can't count them as normal aviation accidents as the others are. It has not much to do with safety of aviation and must not be discussed in this coherence. Also accidents of small private aircrafts do not belong to the normal discussion of safety of civil aviation, because we know very well that safety in the private aviation is something very else than in public civil aviation (less trained pilots, VFR etc).

Historicly, August has been one of the deadliest months of the year for aircraft accidents. July is another month with high numbers.

August 20th at DTW
I saw the plane on the runway exit when landing form SFO.
I read something about it in the online version of a Detroit newspaper; can't find the link now

There is a very comprehensive site which keeps a database of air accidents and incidents - http://aviation-safety.net/index.php

I think that should help (and perhaps also put the events of last month into a bit of perspective...)
