Did UPS And FedEx Cancel Their 380 Orders?

Thu Aug 25, 2005 1:43 am

I was on Airbus's website and in the orders/deliveries section they do not show any orders for the 380 for either FedEx or UPS. I know that UPS just ordered 8 744F but was not sure if they cancelled their 380 order. As for FedEx I have no clue why they wouldn't show their 380 order, is it because they delayed their order or something?

I would bet that the web site only lists orders for the passenger A380.

Nope, it was 747-400F's that they ordered.

No it is the 744F, I don't think there is such a animal as a 764F.

Um, I don't know where you're looking exactly, but when I open the orders and deliveries section of Airbus' website, the FedEx order most certainly is there.

As for UPS, the A380 order is not there because the final contract has not been signed yet. Airbus only puts orders in there after all the paperwork is done and the contract is final. For the same reason their A300 cancellations do not show yet, they're still shown as having orders for 90. It's a matter of time, they'll show up.

it only shows the A300/310 orders.

For UPS, yes it does, as explained above. For FedEx, the A380s are there. Not sure how you're missing that... Could it be you didn't see that in the spreadsheet, the A380F is listed separately from the passenger version?

IND is spending a several Million for the A380 Upgrades for FedEx (Scheduled) and for diversions from nearby ORD or elsewhere

UPS say the new 747F order is to supplement the A380's, (they'll also arrive a couple of years sooner), as well as replacing on some routes, MD-11F's.

Actually it's to supplement their entry into the Heavy Lift Cargo segment. The 380F will not have the ability to lift the required loads.

Can people quit it with the negative Airbus posts ??

Dont you think if 5X and FX cancelled the A380 it would be big news?

Yes it does. You just have to look for it. Keep in mind, the list is only for orders in FY2005. I think UPS and FDX posted their orders in FY2004. If you go to the North American page, you'll see them there.

Now, if Airbus keeps pushing the delivery dates back, that could be another story....and I'll bet anything that the Boeing Sale Team is calling in some sweet deals to FDX and UPS to cancel the A380 orders.

He couldn't find the orders under Airbus order page and wondered why this was the case. There is no negative Airbus bias either explicitly or implied.

Stop being so sensitive, it was not an anti-Airbus comment, but a simple question. You are correct though in that common sense could have been used, but, this is certainly not a negative Airbus comment.....

According to the UPS Dispatch biweekly news letter, (which came out Monday) the A380s are still on order. The new 747s will supplement the current MD-11s and A380s on order, "operating global trunk routes between North America, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. The 747-400 will offer UPS more payload and range capability than the current MD-11s."

On a side note, UPS has no firm retirement dates for the 747 Classics, but they are looking to get rid of them within the next 2 to 4 years, depending on "package volume growth, replacement aircraft supply, and the physical condition of the 747-100/200 fleets."

When I saw the thread title I clicked immediately. I read his post and it took me less than 30 seconds to find that the answer to the question in the title is clearly no. Maybe it would be better to ask "Where can I find xxx on yyy's website?". But I admit the thread title used will get significantly more clicks  Wink

Probably true. But I do wonder if it's also some sort of 'insurance' in case the worst rumours about the A380 turn out to be true.

I think Boeing is making some generous deals to keep the 747-line active and made UPS an offer that was too good to turn down.

Anyway I think it is nearly inconceivable that either carrier would cancel the A380 order at this point, particularly FedEx. There was an article on www.aviationnow.com a couple of years ago that discusses the very substantial efficiency gain that FedEx will get out of the A380. The efficiency gain seemed large enough that even if the A380 is misses its targets by some margin, FedEx would still benefit greatly from the A380.

The A380F order is still happening for FedEX, and UPS. If you download the excel spreadsheet from airbus.com it will show that FedEx still has 10 orders for the A380F.

The question lies in what the hell is happening with UPS' A380 order/conversion???

According to Airbus they have A300 on order and not an A380. I don't think UPS can get out of this... they have to order something. So time will tell. What threw the wrench is how they just purchased NEW 744. Very odd indeed...
