Shortest Runway With Commercial Service In The U.S

Thu Aug 25, 2005 5:55 am

Hey guys, I just wanted your opinion on how many airports have a small runway like for example 6,500 Ft. and under with commercial service for example SNA or similar.

You should probably be more specific. There are a bunch of airports with little runways that receive commercial service with 9-seat CNA's, BEC's, 19-seat B1900's, 30 seat SF3's, EM2's, or DH3's.

Provincetown MA has only a 3500 foot runway, but sees service from cape air to a few places including BOS.

In the 70s, a UA DC10 ran low on fuel over Washington DC waiting for Dulles to clear, and had to land at Washington National. They had to take the seats and galleys off to get the plane out again, would have loved to have been there or see photos of a 'Ten at DCA.

I looked in Colorado first, hoping to find a short runway there (no luck), but the shortest I could find was Chadron, Nebraska (United Express), at 6001 feet.

The only place I could find listed on a website route map was Bluefield, WV, at 4742 feet (USAirways Express). I actually found a shorter runway in Canada - Iles de la Madeleine (YGC), which receives USAirways Express (at least it's on their route map), whose runway is only 4500 feet long.

I used http://gc.kls2.com/ - you can type in any code and get information on the airport.

Did that help? Big grin

I think that JHM - Kapalua, Maui - wins the award with a 3000' runway that receives service on Island Air DHC-8's from HNL.

It could be in general I guess DeltaMIA, regional and mainland service, but if you want to make this forum a bit more interesting, how about just mainland service on a short runway.

Dutch Harbor, AK (DUT) is only about 3500 feet long. AS used to fly 732's in there daily, weather permitting. Now AS wet-leases PenAir SF340 aircraft on the route to increase frequency and reliability.

And there are TONS of airports in Alaska that have runways as short or shorter than that but still receive scheduled service.

I'm sure nobody here can tell us the shortest Alaska runway with scheduled flights. If you're just asking about jet flights-- does Key West still have them?

ISP's runway 33L/15R is just over 5000' and sees regular Southwest action. Runway 28/10 is also just over 5000' and occasionally handles some 737's as well.

EWR's runway 11/29 is 6,800ft long, on most days Regional Jets, Private Jets and light 737s etc utilize it mostly for landings. On windy days I've seen 777s and A340s land on runway 29.

GSO has a runway 6380x150 that is occasionally used for regional jets and for 737's. Doesn't get much bigger than that at GSO unless its going to Timco.

As far as big jet service (over 70 seats) for landings and takeoffs, I believe SDU holds the record at just over 4300 feet long and handles A319 and 737 services on a daily basis, albeit they are mostly short shuttle type flights and don't carry a lot of fuel. As far as the U.S. goes, I'm sure SNA holds the record at just 5700 feet and handles 757 heavies daily.

Uhm, that can't be more of an untrue statement. 6 A300 flights minimum for FedEx a day, 1-2 A300 for Tradewinds, DC10/MD11 weekly of World, 2 daily 757 of UPS, not to mention the Delta MD88s and Air Force C130s plus the soon to be daily 747s.

It's the greatest airport to fly OUT of. All the flights I've been on out of there - both 757 and 737 - entailed spooling up the engines prior to brake release. And then, because of noise abatement procedures in affect, power-back usually occurs at around 1,000 feet AGL. Overall, it's a more exciting take-off than typical - and boring - passenger flights.

But, hey, it can't beat the take-off in the video posted by ZSOFN in reply #16!

What about the shortest runway with a long-haul flight to the USA?

I think the winner of this category has to be Bristol the South West of England. The runway is only 2078M long and has a daily B757 service to Newark (EWR)!

Wings Field, in the Philadelphia suburbs, used to have scheduled Islander and Tri-Islander flights from its own home airline, Wings Airways, to PHL and a few other mid-atlantic destinations in the 80's and early 90's...at the time of the service, the runway length was 2,600 ft.

STT currently has 7000 feet and they handle AA A300s, but back in the early '70s they handled 727-100s with just a 4658 foot runway, until the AA disaster and that was the end of big jet service there for a while until they built a paralell 5100 foot runway, which was still way too short.

Outside of the US, London City has a very short runway (10/28), of 4327 feet. This is a very short runway with a very cool approach. It might also be one of the shortest with an ILS approach. Don't quote me on that.
