ATA Airlines

I just flew on ATA from Cancun to LAX. I have a few questions.
1) On both flights there were three people in the cockpit, on the return the FA introduced one as the international officer. Is this normal? Whats the story?
2) The flight was listed as a L1011 but we flew on a 757. Are all the L1011's being used for the military transports? Whats the story on the ATA L1011's because i was really disapointed not to fly on one..

The Wednesday flight is scheduled as a 757. The Saturday and Sunday services are L1011s.

Perhaps the 3rd person in the cockpit was a deadhead riding the jumpseat...

I would venture to guess that the third international officer in the cockpit is because of the flight range between LAX and CUN. The pilots most likely have a clause in their collective bargaining agreement that requires a third cockpit crewmember on international flights of a specific range and duration. Although Boeing 747-400, 767-300, and 777-200 aircraft are theoretically two-man cockpits, I know that United has a third international officer for crew rest breaks on all of their international flights.

The 3rd pilot in the cockpit is used to allow the same crew to operate LAX-CUN and back the same day without staying in Cancun.
Two man crew duty is limited to only 8hours, while the three man crew allows for 12hours of flying.

Military. Usually departs Monday night and is back in time for the weekend.
