When Did UK Charters Ban Smoking?

Sat Aug 27, 2005 1:38 am

I was watching "Airline" on Sky Travel the other night. It was the first series, the one about Britannia. On the programme they were following a wedding party travelling to the Dominican Republic. Anyhow, they were filming on board and one member of the party was smoking, the stewardess told her she must remain in her seat to smoke (she was standing in the aisle).

I think this was filmed around 1996/1997 time, so obviously Britannia at least still allowed smoking. I was surprised, I imagined that smoking would have been banned way before 1996/7. Anyone know exactly when it was banned - can't have been much after that was filmed?

I remember flying with BY in 1995 and I sat in non-smoking with my friend and brother while my parents sat in the rear in the smoking section, but I flew with AIH the following year and can't remember if there was smoking and non-smoking. To be honest, I don't think there was smoking allowed in 1996

Smoking on short haul UK charters stopped in Oct/Nov 1995. The reason I remember was I flew to Cyprus around that time with Air 2000 and smoking was allowed on the outward flight but banned by the time I flew back 2 weeks later.

Not sure when it was banned on UK charter long hauls but it was definitely a few years later.

I flew to Tenerife in 1995 when smoking was allowed. Made me laugh as my aunty requested to be sat at the back in the smoking section with her boyfriend so that she could have a smoke as her parents (my grandparents), who were also travelling with us, didn't know she smoked! The rest of us all sat in the no smoking section towards the front.

Strange, i seem to remember an episode of that series where the cabin crew told the passneger off for smoking. The conversation was something like this:

FA - Sorry you cant smoke on this flight
Passneger - Why not? You sold me fags, now why cantI smoke them?
FA - Well......Boots sell condoms.......I rest my case

:D

Im sure it was the britannia series, perhaps the law changed half-way through?

Paramount was the first UK charter airline to operate no smoking flightsa on its MD83s. This was long before the other charter airlines followed suit.

Even a foot note against Paramount operated flights in holiday brochures stating 'Please note, Paramount flights are non-smoking'!

I flew with Caledonian on the good old DC-10 over the Atlantic and my family were all split up because we were on Standby. My Dad, an ex smoker, had to endure 9 hours of smoke. That was August 1997.

Yes it was Britannia, and the cabin crew in person that said these fantastic words was BJ, based at MAN I think. He was a character. Does anyone know if he still works at BY?

I would have thought BJ of Britannia Airways has gone on to a stage career or a daytime soap opera. He was one dramatic, camera loving guy!
