Depends on the operating preferences of the carriers contracted. LGG is indeed the closest airport to Spa Francorchamps (except the local airport of course) but LUX is almost as close and has a better infrastructure.

Wouldn't they be coming from their home bases not the last race?

A lorry driver who delivers to my work also does driving for the F1 teams in the UK. He told us they go over in containers by boat, which surprised me.

I think last year most teams had their equipment delivered at VCP by a Polet AN-124, except for Ferrari.

LUX would be a much better option and CargoLux serves Brazil (VCP, CWB and PNZ) 2-3 x week with the B747F.

the flights are too full to have space for F1 equipment (they are operating 3 x per week)

Supplies such as fuels etc go over months in advance on ships. The cars and critical supplies go on the freighters.

Charters are organised by Formula One Management and depart from London and Munich.

at least in the last years they used Alitalia! I know that because always when F1 is in Brazil AZ Cargo is offering ad-hoc space to Viracopos Airport.

I'm sure I remember hearing on UK TV coverage a few years back cars etc are moved by air as we'd expect though only 2 airports in Europe are capable of handling this type of cargo, from memory I’m sure it was AMS & LUX. This was down to x-ray machine sizes and being able to screen the cargo before flying, or these airports had decompression facilities. I know at least LHR has decompression facilities now.....

Like I said this is from memory and it was a few years back.

As for the fuel being shipped by Variglog. I don't know the exact details of the fuel though it will be incredibly flammable as we’d all expect. I also don’t know how much fuel is used over the practice sessions, qualifying and race over all the teams though I’d bet it would take a hell of a lot of flights to meet the IATA DG regulations to get the required amount of fuel to destination. My guess is it’ll go over long in advance by ocean or it’ll be sourced more locally.

well in 4 - 6 flights it should be ok to ship it ... the restriction is that you can only fligh it on cargo airplanes not on pax flights... and of course you can not send the flight full with fuele on the way, but some kgs should be ok.

Formula 1 logisitcs is all controled by Bernie and for the Uk teams STN is usually used. All the equipment will be trucked back to the teams bases (this won't take long, the trucks are usually away by sunday evening) before being shipped to brazil so they certainly won't use a Belgian airport.
