US Airways A330/A340

Sat May 06, 2000 8:29 am

Guys, I know that it is possible for US Airways to convert A330 orders to A340 orders; however, is it likely that they will do so sometime in the future? If the A330 and the A340 were to cost the same, why didn't US just buy A340's so they could use them on trans-Pacific or other long-range routes if they wanted to?

If USAirways ever decides to expand to the Pacific and South America from their current hubs, I wouldn't be suprised to see some A330-200s or A340s on the way.

330s are cheaper to operate than 340s because of having 2 engines instead of 4, so unless you really need the 340 range, there is no point to getting it.

The chance of it flying in the future for US is pretty good if you ask me though. That will be a few years off though when US slows its Euro expansion.

Well I've seeen LH A340's operating out of Detroit to Frankfurt, and I believe that that range can easily be convered by their A300's/A310's. What is the purpose of them doing that?

Just a couple of quick thoughts here.... US doesn't like anything with more than two engines. They moved pretty quickly to get rid of the Trump 727s.

As far as LH operating A340 for DTW/FRA, haven't you learned that the prevailing method of decision making for some airlines is the occasional random act of management?

FRA-DTW is a route I frequently travel, LH doesn´t operate any 330`s at all. I guess they decided just to stay with 340`s so they don´t have to care maintaining the different engines on both types. That may save some cost overall.
I also wonder what USAir is going to decide for them, since I have no clue about their current and future routes.

Lufthansa doesn't need the A340's range for it's East Coast USA flights, but for other routes to the Far East the A340's range is needed. US Airways don't have a single route long enough to justify the A340 at the moment.
