By departing ATL at 0910, they have essentially eliminated connection possibilities from much of their outlying network. For the most part, even the earliest departures for ATL will not arrive in time to connect to the CUN flight.
Poor thinking, IMO.

Prediction:

You will not get one credible poster complaining about Airtran starting service into a "Delta" market. You will not hear Delta Mgt complaining about how Airtran is trashing the market.

Yet you get multiple threads about poor Airtran in Bloomington and other former exclusive Airtran markets and how Delta is being mean to them..LOL

I work for a major whose hub is now being looked at very hard by FL, and judging by the amount of flts they have there, I say good for them. However, I think they may get surprised at how much money it may cost them to operate down there. I could be wrong. Anyone wonder why WN has not started svc to some destinations in Mexico? Seems to me they should be ok down there. Just a though.

Not really, it is not their business model. If it isn't broken, don't fix it.

Actually, many of there cities have 6am departures into Atlanta which means they can in fact connect to the Cancun flight.

This is effectively the opening of the Caribbean to FL, and I'm sure more such leisure destinations will soon be announced. FL has done a good job of covering all continental vacation destinations, and now they're pulling an NK and opening up some Lat Am destinations. Good for them for looking into some int'l markets.

Great,

Another Peanuts and soft drink airline to Mexico. Just
got back from Puerto Vallarta on American to ORD and
probably one of the worse services I have ever experienced.

What is happening to the US airline industry??

I second that question!

Good for AirTran. They have always kind of played "under the radar" and with this announcement, Im sure we will see some more international expansion to come. CUN is also a great use of their 73Gs.

Great news- looking foward to it!

What specifically was so bad?

I just flew AA to Mexico and had a great experience.

Poor thinking, IMO.

The following cities will have flights timed to connect with the CUN departure:

CAK
BWI
BMI
BUF
CLT
MDW
DFW
DAY
FNT
FLL
HOU
IND
JAX
LAS
LAX
MEM
DTW
MLI
LGA
EWR
PHF
MCO
PHL
PIT
RDU
RIC
ROC
SFO
TPA
DCA
IAD

The following will NOT have connection opportunities:

BOS
DEN
FPO
RSW
GPT
MCI
MIA
MKE
MSP
MSY
PNS
ICT
PBI
SAV
SRQ

Hardly seems like most of the "outlying network" to me...

""I work for a major whose hub is now being looked at very hard by FL,""

I didn't pay attention to the authors name, but now I see he means DFW. Does that message mean that FL is looking to add or shrink at DFW. With the wright amendment possibly going away, maybe opportunity is better elsewhere.

When is the peak time down there? I would think March would capture more of the spring break crowd.

Peak is around March, though it is a year-round destination, it only really slows down in late August and September.

Given fuel prices in their relationship to airfares (especially to CUN and other leisure destinations in Mexico), I'm surprised airlines aren't offering hard benches with no seat backs in coach.

Good for FL. I hope it goes well for them.

Although I have to say not having the entire network able to connect on the flight is a rather odd thing to hear about, especially from major cities like DEN and MSP, MKE, and some of the others listed.

Are the 73Gs overwater equiped? I know that a lot of their planes were not equipped with life vests and other requirements (at least I heard that), and thus required them to stay within gliding distance of the shore. I know CUN does not require ETOPS, but will modifications need to be made, or are they using 737s instead of 717s because they equipped the 737s with overwater equipment from the start?
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

For FL to offer connex from those cities especially DEN, the originating
flight would have to leave there no later than 0300L to make it to ATL
and have legal connection time there to make the CUN flight. I remember
working at RDU and pax had trouble getting up and making our 0600
originating flight to ATL.

Of course, I checked to see if my town of BOS had an early flight, and it did not. Sorry to have generalized.

Given the amount of non-stop service available DEN/CUN, I would think Airtran - sensibly - has decided not to bother about those few (if any) possible connecting pax.

cheers

Wow, what a surprise comment, Padcrasher. At least you waited to be the 2nd reply.

Delta flies nonstop to, what, 211 cities from ATL now? It isn't possible for FL to add a new destination without stepping on DL's toes. Or does Delta "own" ATL now?

Thank you, once again, for trying to create an anti-DL backlash where one doesn't exist. Do you enjoy this?

What about Puerto Vallarta, Cabo San Lucas, Cozumel, Acapulco. Everybody seems to be interested on CUN. However, I'm happy for Airtran...

All of AirTran's 717s and 73Gs are now equipped with life vests.
